AI Quantity Take-offs (A realistic workflow)
AI can save time throughout the take-off process, even when you do the measuring yourself.
This is how I would build it into your workflow:
Start with a standard assembly library. Define what you measure and how that quantity translates into materials, labour and plant.
Decide where the quantities need to end up. Have your estimating workbook or procurement template ready. This will determine the output format.
Use AI to organise the drawings and adapt your assemblies to the project's legends and specifications. Check its assumptions.
Measure the primary quantities, then use AI to transfer the checked results into your estimate, procurement schedules or indicative programme.
Save the repeated steps as skills so you can reuse the process on the next job.
For lump-sum pricing, I would still measure and check the quantities myself. Approximate AI take-offs can help with budgets and cross-checking, provided you understand their limitations.
If you use AI to measure, check the drawing scale and orientation, compare results against known dimensions, and get it to show uncertain areas for you to confirm.
