I have been working on SEO improvement for a few of my family's businesses. They have been struggling with visibility and being recognized on search engines, haha hence SEO.
They wanted to keep the process in house, so I went learning. Here is what I came up with.
Most contractor sites don't tell Google two basic things, what kind of work you do and where you do it. Seems obvious, I know, but both companies I am working with missed this in some form.
Here is how I fix that in 15 minutes, with no crazy coding and no extra cost.
Step 1. Copy this prompt into ChatGPT or Claude (I prefer Claude) and fill in the brackets.
You are helping a local contractor get found on Google.
Business name: [name]
Main type of work: [type of work]
Towns I work in: [list every town]
Phone: [number]
Write these four things in plain words:
1. A page title under 60 characters, in this form: Type of Work in Main Town | Business Name
2. A page description under 155 characters that includes the type of work, the main town, and the phone number
3. A short "Areas we serve" paragraph that names each town once
4. Five questions clients ask before hiring for this kind of project, each with a two-sentence answer
Step 2. Put the title and description in your site's SEO settings. Wix, Squarespace, and WordPress all have a box for each on every page.
Step 3. Add the "Areas we serve" paragraph to your home page. Google can only show you for a town if that town is written on your site.
Step 4. Add the five questions and answers near the bottom of the page. These match what people type into Google.
Step 5. Open your site on your phone and tap your phone number. If it doesn't start a call, fix that before anything else.
Since doing this, we have gotten both businesses on the front page of search engines. It's not the top, but we are working on that next with reviews!
Keep crushing, enjoy the weekend.
