Many of us make major life decisions before we ever stop to ask: Why do I want this? Where did I learn that? What do I actually need? Who am I when I am not trying to be who I was taught to be? This journal is an opportunity to begin understanding the story that brought you here—not so you can criticize your past, but so you can become more intentional about what comes next. You do not need to have everything figured out. You simply need to become curious about your own journey. 1. Why Did I Get Married? For many women, marriage isn't presented as one possible life path. It is quietly presented as evidence that life is going correctly. We receive messages about what makes a woman desirable, respectable, successful, secure, or “good.” Before exploring what happened inside your marriage, explore what marriage originally represented to you. Journal When I was growing up, what did I learn about marriage? What did the women around me seem to believe marriage provided? What messages did I receive about women who got married? What messages did I receive about women who didn't? Complete this sentence without overthinking it: Getting married meant that I was ____________________________. What did I hope marriage would give me emotionally? What did I hope it would give me practically? What did I believe it would say about me? Looking back now: Which of those desires were genuinely mine—and which may have been inherited from family, culture, religion, society, or expectations around me? 2. What Do I Actually Need? We become very skilled at knowing what other people need from us. The harder question can be: What do I need in order to feel like myself? Think beyond survival.
