🎉Welcome to the place where we stop pretending this is fine. If you're here, I'm guessing you're a little tired of parenting spaces that feel like they were designed for a completely different family than yours. The ones where "have you tried a reward chart?" is the answer to everything. Yeah. Not our people. This is Effing Happy, and we are absolutely your people. I'm Jennifer, and I've been in the trenches of complex-needs parenting for over 20 years. I've done the hospital waiting rooms and the 2am phone calls and the cleaning up of things I never thought I'd be cleaning up. I've also done the DBT training and the Family Connections program and the suicide prevention work, because when you're parenting kids in crisis, you become a very specific kind of expert whether you signed up for that or not. This community exists because parents like us need a place that can handle our reality, the whole messy, exhausting, sometimes-terrifying, still-somehow-loving reality of it. ➡️So let's do this. Drop a comment and tell us who you are and what brings you here. You don't have to sanitize it. You don't have to make it sound okay. Just tell us what's real, and watch how fast you feel less alone. I'll start: I'm Jenn, I'm a mom of four, two of whom have complex needs that have kept me on my toes in the most demanding way imaginable, and I built this community because I spent years looking for it and it didn't exist yet. Your turn.
We have a new human! 💜
Everyone help me welcome Maira M. to Effing Happy! Maira, I’m so glad you’re here.💜 And while I’m saying hello, this is probably a good time to say hello to the rest of you, too. 😊 Come in. Poke around. Make sure you can access the 2am Companion and play with it a little. It’s there for those moments when your brain is spinning and you need somewhere to put all the thoughts that feel SO VERY IMPORTANT at 2am. And if you feel like it, reach out and introduce yourself. Tell me a little about you, your family, what brought you here - or hey, just say hi. No elaborate introduction required. I’m really glad you’re all here. We have some very exciting things in the works, and I’m looking forward to building this little corner of the internet with you.
Those “first day” backpack photos? They’re lying.
School’s back in session. Or maybe homeschool restarted. Or you’re three weeks into a new IEP meeting cycle and already tired of the acronym soup. However this season looks for your family, here’s what I know. The kid who melted down on day two isn’t broken, and neither are you. September is the month everyone else posts backpack photos and first day smiles, while some of us are white knuckling through transition meltdowns, sensory overload, or a kid who held it together at school and is now falling apart the second they walk in your door. That falling apart at home thing, by the way, is a compliment. It means you’re the safe place. It doesn’t feel like a compliment at 6pm when the backpack goes flying, but it is one. You don’t have to have this figured out by Labor Day. You get to still be figuring it out in October, November, and honestly, all year. That’s not failure. That’s just what this looks like. Tell me your best IRL back to school moment so far, the real one, not the “first day, isn’t this great?”backpack photo version. I’ll go first in the comments.
Well...I'm back. 💜
The last couple of months have been...a lot, ya know? There has been a broken hand, work deadlines, family health issues, middle-of-the-night phone calls, parenting adult kids through hard choices, trying to be present for my granddaughter, and all the ordinary chaos that somehow still has to happen in between. If you've ever looked around and wondered how one person can possibly wear this many hats, *we're probably speaking the same language.* If you've been here for a while, you already know that my life isn't built around neat little routines. Some weeks I'm writing about boundaries and resilience. Other weeks I'm answering a phone call in the middle of the night, trying to help put out fires I never saw coming. I realized something while I was away. I kept waiting for life to calm down before showing up again. I kept thinking, "Once this settles down, I'll get back to writing." But I don't think that's how this works. For so many of us, there isn't a magical season where everything is finally stable and we suddenly have endless time, energy, and emotional bandwidth. There is just today, and whatever today happens to bring. This community has never been about having it all figured out. It's about the messy middle—the place where we're doing our best, loving our kids fiercely, celebrating tiny victories, grieving the hard days, and trying not to lose ourselves in the process. That's where I am. And maybe that's where you are, too. So let's pick up where we left off. No guilt. No apologies. No pretending everything is fine. I'd love to hear from you. What's one thing you're carrying right now? It could be a win you're celebrating, something that's keeping you up at night, or simply the thing that feels the heaviest this week. Drop it in the comments. 👇 This is still a place where you don't have to explain yourself first. 💜
The dog bite isn’t even the hard part…
I got bit by a dog this week. Worth saying upfront, it was my fault. I knew better, did the thing anyway, and a dog who was just doing their thing reminded me of the rules. No drama. Just a fair consequence and a bandage situation I brought entirely on myself. Here’s the part I actually want to talk about. That bite is maybe the smallest thing that went sideways this week, and it’s still the thing that cracked something open, because it landed on top of a week that was already too much. Childcare I didn’t plan for. Plans that fell through right when I needed them to hold. The specific flavor of life just life-ing while you’re already running on fumes, where nothing is technically a crisis and yet everything still feels like one. I didn’t sign up for any of this, the dog bite or the extra hours or the week where I can’t do the things that would’ve actually felt good. I’m frustrated, and I’m not going to dress that up for you. This is usually where I’d pivot to the silver lining, the lesson, the gratitude reframe. I’m not doing that today, because that’s not what this place is for. We don’t do toxic positivity here. The hard part doesn’t get smaller just because I found something nice to set next to it. So instead, both/and. It’s been a genuinely rough week, and I’m still here. I’m frustrated, and I haven’t gone anywhere. Both of those are true at the same time, and neither one cancels the other out. It stings a little to take my own medicine, if I’m honest. I write this stuff for you on the easier weeks. Living it on a week like this one is a different exercise entirely. And today is Father’s Day, which I know lands complicated for some of us, whether that’s a dad who isn’t in the picture the way you wished he’d be, or a day where you’re quietly doing both jobs and nobody’s saying thank you for either one. I’m not going to tell you to make peace with that by tonight. I’m just going to say I’m right here with you, on a hard week, on a complicated day, bandaged hand and all.
