Faithful Even in Anguish
What does the Bible actually say about crying out in distress?
Consider three biblical examples.
Example 1: Jesus Christ
Matthew 27:46 records Jesus crying out to his Father while suffering on the torture stake.
Jesus was expressing profound anguish. His cry did not mean that he had lost God's approval.
In fact, Jesus remained faithful to his Father until his death.
What does this teach us?
A cry of anguish is not proof that someone has lost God's favour. Even a perfectly faithful servant of God can experience extreme distress.
Example 2: Stephen
Acts 7:59, 60 records Stephen praying to Jesus and asking Jehovah not to hold the sin of his executioners against them as he was dying.
Stephen was being killed because of his faith. His final words demonstrated his trust in God and his concern for others.
The account does not establish that a person's manner of dying determines their standing with God.
Example 3: Jesus' executioners
Luke 23:46 records Jesus' final words as he entrusted his spirit to his Father. His death fulfilled his faithful course of service.
The important point is not whether someone dies quietly or cries out, but whether we have a sound biblical basis for judging their spiritual standing.
We do not.
