🎸 Back to Guitar September Challenge — FREE Live Classes!
Hey, I've been looking through the bios of people joining this group, and I've noticed something that comes up again and again... A lot of you used to play guitar, have fallen out of the habit, and now want to pick it up again and finally have a go at fingerstyle guitar. So I thought September would be the perfect time to do something about it! I'm starting a 3-Week Back to Guitar Challenge, with two completely FREE live guitar classes every week. The classes will take place on Zoom, so you'll be able to follow along with me from home. And don't worry — you don't need to turn your camera on, show your face or play guitar in front of anybody! You can simply grab your guitar, watch me and play along from the comfort of your own home. 🎸 What are we going to learn? We'll start right at the beginning and gradually work towards playing a proper fingerstyle arrangement. Lesson 1 — Get Your Fingers Moving Simple exercises to get your fingers working again, followed by something musical to put them into practice. Lesson 2 — Open Chords & Arpeggios Refresh your essential open chords and learn how to turn them into beautiful-sounding fingerstyle arpeggios. Lesson 3 — Famous Chord Progressions as Arpeggios We'll take some familiar chord progressions and use them to practise different fingerpicking patterns. Lesson 4 — Introduction to Travis Picking Learn the basics of alternating bass and start building that classic Travis picking sound. Lesson 5 — Easy Fingerstyle Melodies We'll move onto playing simple melodies and develop the control you need to play them cleanly. Lesson 6 — Turn a Simple Melody Into a Fingerstyle Arrangement Finally, we'll take an easy melody and gradually add bass notes, chords and fingerpicking until we've turned it into a complete solo fingerstyle arrangement. 🗓️ When are the classes? We'll meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:45pm Spain / Central European time for three weeks. 🇬🇧 3:45pm UK & Ireland 🇺🇸 10:45am Eastern 🇺🇸 9:45am Central

🎸 Welcome – Start Here (Read Me First)
Hi, Welcome to the Fingerstyle Learners Group — it's great to have you here. This group was created to help beginner and intermediate players improve their fingerstyle guitar one step at a time, without feeling overwhelmed. Whether you're completely new to fingerstyle or returning to the guitar after a break, you're in the right place. 📚 Where To Start Head over to the Classroom tab at the top of the group. Inside you'll find: • This week's Tab Of The Week • This week's Exercise Of The Week • My collection of free learning materials • Beginner tips and tutorials My advice is simple: start with the Tab Of The Week and Exercise Of The Week. They're updated regularly and are the quickest way to start improving your fingerstyle playing. 🎥 Video Lessons You'll also find video lessons from my fingerstyle tab library. Many members use these videos alongside their tabs to help them learn songs faster, improve their technique and stay motivated. 💬 Get Involved One of the best things about this group is the community. Please introduce yourself and let me know: • Your current playing level • The songs you'd love to learn • What you're working on right now • Any questions you're stuck on Don't be afraid to ask beginner questions. If something doesn't make sense to you, there's a good chance other members are wondering the same thing. In fact, I've recently started creating regular Beginner Questions posts based on questions from members, so your question might end up helping dozens of other players too. 🎵 Want More Tabs Every Week? If you're enjoying the free materials, you might be interested in my new Fingerstyle Tab Club. I created it after speaking to members who wanted access to my new tabs and exercises each week but didn't necessarily need a full premium membership. For just $7 per month — less than $2 per week and about the price of a coffee — you'll get access to exclusive weekly tab bundles that include: • Full and Easy Versions of new songs • Beginner-friendly arrangements
Live Lesson 1
Could not make the live lesson but enjoyed watching the replay. Question: do you mainly play nylon string? I notice you had a steel string acoustic in the background.
Missed Lesson One Yesterday? Watch the Replay Today 🎸
Hey everyone, Yesterday I taught the first live lesson in my Back To Guitar short course. Thank you to everyone who joined me — I hope you enjoyed it and found it useful! I know the live times won't work for everyone, so I've decided that for the whole of September, I'm going to make all six lesson replays available here for free. And there's a reason I've created this course. There are now over 1,700 members in this group, and I read the bios you fill in when you join. Again and again, I see essentially the same story: "I played guitar when I was younger..." "I've always wanted to learn properly..." "Now I'm retired and have more time..." "I've always wanted to play fingerstyle..." This course is specifically for you. We're starting right at the beginning and over six lessons we'll build up the basic skills you need to start playing fingerstyle guitar. Once you've completed the course, you'll be in a much better position to move onto my easy fingerstyle arrangements and actually start learning songs. Now for a little tough love... I've been teaching guitar for more than 20 years, and I've learned something very simple: Almost anyone can learn to play guitar. But most people who want to learn never actually do. It's usually not because they aren't capable. And it's not because they're lazy. It's because it's incredibly easy to say: "I'll practise tomorrow." Then tomorrow becomes next week. Next week becomes next month. And suddenly another year has gone by and the guitar is still sitting in the corner. I've been guilty of exactly the same thing with things I've wanted to learn. So if you're at a stage of life where you've finally got a little more time, you've always wanted to play guitar, and right now you have a free course specifically designed to get you started — plus an experienced teacher you can ask questions along the way... I have one question for you: If you're not going to start now, when are you going to do it? 🎸 Lesson 1 replay is available below.
Reflective Thoughts
I was being a little reflective this morning. Having recently celebrated my 79tb trip around the sun I have quite a lot to reflect on. Yes it is a fact that most of us tend to remember the good times while somehow deemphasizing the bad times, but the state of current civilizations around the world seem to be lacking in the civility bit. At the time the TV was on in the background and an advertisement was utilizing a tune from the mid 60’s. One normally associated with Dianne Warwick, but I associate with Jackie DeShannon. I went and checked @Jack Gration ’s back catalog but could not find it. How about it Jack would it work as a finger style piece. https://youtu.be/YUaxVQPohlU?si=OHXbDAajA4CC-dm1
