Sympathy = feeling for someone. It’s pity from a distance. It can make people feel smaller or alone. (“Poor you”) VS. Empathy = feeling with someone. It’s stepping into their experience to understand it (“This must feel really scary right now”). It builds trust without you having to absorb their pain.
