You want to know one of the biggest secrets to making it in basketball?
NEVER. GIVE. UP.
It sounds simple, but you’d be surprised how many people quit before they ever reach their potential.
They finish high school and stop playing. They don’t get the college offers they wanted, so they give up. They see how much work it’s going to take to reach their goals, and decide it isn’t worth it.
But what if you’re closer than you think? What if the only thing separating you from the player you want to become is the decision to keep going when everyone else quits?
Let me tell you a story.
A few years ago, after finishing my first professional season, I was playing in scrimmages against a mid-level Division II player. At the time, I was torching him. I was the better player, and so were plenty of other guys we played against.
But there was one thing he did that a lot of people didn’t.
HE KEPT SHOWING UP.
No matter how many times he got beat, he kept competing. He didn’t make excuses. He didn’t let those losses convince him he wasn’t good enough. He put his head down and went to work.
Fast-forward a few months, and his Division II team was scrimmaging against the University of Kentucky. YES, THE KENTUCKY WILDCATS. 🐱
He went out there and dropped over 25 points against them. He followed that up with an incredible senior season, and most recently, he finished a professional season in Mexico, averaging nearly 30 POINTS PER GAME.
Think about that for a second.
I never would have imagined he’d be playing professionally, let alone putting up numbers like that. And I wasn’t the only one who underestimated him.
But he didn’t care who was better than him yesterday. He was focused on becoming better tomorrow.
Here’s the point of this story.
A lot of the guys who were better than him quit. They stopped working. They walked away from the game, and their potential went with them.
He didn’t.
He kept putting in the work when other people moved on. He kept chasing his goals when other people decided they weren’t realistic. He earned his opportunities through the work he was willing to put in.
Now, I’m not telling you that if you never give up, you’ll automatically make it to the NBA or play professionally. Basketball doesn’t work that way.
I’m telling you that if you quit, you’ll never find out how good you could have been.
So if you’re a high school player who isn’t getting recruited, KEEP GOING.
If you’re sitting on the bench, KEEP WORKING.
If you’re getting beat in workouts, KEEP COMPETING.
If people tell you that you’re not good enough, let your work speak for itself.
You might not be the best player in the gym today. That’s okay. You don’t have to be.
You just have to be willing to keep getting better long after everyone else decides they’ve done enough.
DON’T LET TODAY’S LIMITATIONS BECOME TOMORROW’S REGRETS.
Keep showing up. Keep working. Keep believing.
And whatever you do, don’t quit before you give yourself a chance. 🏀🔥
