Caregiving can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to remember everything. Here are a few simple hacks I learned through years of nursing and caregiving: 1. Keep a caregiver notebook. 2. 3. Write down medications, appointments, symptoms, questions, and changes you notice. 4. Use one medication station. 5. 6. Keep approved medications, the medication list, and your schedule together in one safe place. 7. Lay things out the night before. 8. 9. Clothes, supplies, appointment paperwork, and anything you’ll need in the morning. 10. Create a grab-and-go bag. 11. 12. Include wipes, gloves, an extra outfit, snacks, water, medication information, and emergency contacts. 13. Ask one question at a time. 14. 15. Especially when caring for someone with dementia. Give them time to process and answer. 16. Keep important numbers where everyone can find them. 17. 18. Doctors, pharmacy, family, home health, hospice, and emergency contacts. 19. Schedule YOUR breaks too. 20. 21. Rest is part of the care plan. You cannot safely care for someone when you are completely depleted. And here’s one of the biggest caregiver hacks: Stop trying to remember everything. Create systems that remember for you. Caregiving does not have to be perfect. It needs to be safe, organized, compassionate, and sustainable. — Ma Laurie Your Aging Parent Coach & Wellness Coordinator Still Rising — Honoring Every Life. At Every Stage.
