I have tried building a vocabulary habit with flashcards three times. Twice it fell apart, and both times the reason was the same. I had too many words in a day. What I got wrong was thinking the daily count was the number that mattered. It is not. The number that matters is the ceiling. How big can the pile get on a day I do not show up. Set a cap and the maths changes completely. Miss a day, and the next morning there is one normal session waiting. Nothing extra. Nothing to catch up on. That is the difference between a habit that survives a bad week and one that does not. Not discipline. Not motivation. A ceiling low enough that missing a day costs you nothing. Easy to come back to beats impressive. So what does the day after a missed day look like for you right now.

Thirteen messages with the tutor in one session last week, and the whole thing just moved. I don't think I've had a session flow like that before. Two things sitting under it. I'm making noticeably fewer mistakes, so there's less stopping to get corrected. And more of the instructions can be in Ukrainian now, which means less of the session happens in English. Flow is a different signal from vocabulary or accuracy. It's the first time I've noticed that one moving.

Pick something you have already read or watched in another language. Something you would not mind going through again. You end up understanding far more than your vocabulary should allow, because you already remember the story. The context does the work your word count cannot do yet. The other half of it is that you have to stop looking things up. If you pause on every word you do not know, you kill the enjoyment, and you block the thing that is actually teaching you, which is picking the meaning up from what is around it.

Ukrainian has this thing where the word for with changes the endings of the words that come after it. Those endings have been one of the hardest things for me to nail down in my AI sessions, and I still get corrected on them. But the corrections are coming less often, and some of the endings are starting to feel easier. Here's the part I actually care about. I don't know the rule behind it. I haven't looked it up, and I don't plan to. If I see it enough times, the pattern settles in on its own. That's the whole bet, and watching the corrections drop off without ever opening a grammar book is what keeps me going.
