Step 3: Connect With a VA-Accredited VSO Representative
You don't have to figure out a VA claim alone. Contact your local Veterans service office and ask how to connect with a VA-accredited representative. In VA's guidance, VSO stands for Veterans Service Organization. An accredited VSO representative can help you gather evidence, file a claim, request a decision review, and communicate with VA on your behalf. Their help with VA benefit claims is free. Check accreditation and find someone here: https://www.va.gov/get-help-from-accredited-representative/find-rep/ Contact them to ask whether they're available. Tell them where you are in the process: whether you submitted an intent to file, the date recorded, and which records you have or still need. You don't need to wait until all your paperwork is together to make that first call. If you choose them to represent you, ask about the appointment process. VA uses Form 21-22 for a VSO representative, and both you and the representative sign it. Step 2: Get Your DD214 and Health Paperwork Together
One of the first things I tell veterans: get a copy of your DD214 and start gathering your health paperwork. Your DD214 is your Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty. It documents your military service, including service dates and discharge information. It is often used to verify service for benefits. It is not your medical record. Missing your DD214? You can request it through the National Archives online or use Standard Form 180 by mail or fax. Follow the instructions for your branch, separation date, and record type: https://www.va.gov/records/get-military-service-records/ For health paperwork, the right place depends on where you received care: - Military service treatment records: use the military-records request process. Where records are held can depend on your service and separation date. If you already filed a medical-related VA claim, call 1-800-827-1000 to ask whether VA has your records on file. - VA medical records: contact the Release of Information office at the VA facility where you received care. You can request records through secure messaging to that office, or submit VA Form 10-5345a by mail, fax, or in person: https://www.va.gov/resources/how-to-get-your-medical-records-from-your-va-health-facility/ - Private doctors or hospitals: request records from those providers. An accredited representative can help you understand the permission forms VA needs to request private records for a claim. Keep your paperwork somewhere safe. Don't post your DD214, Social Security number, claim number, or medical records in this group. Don't wait until every record arrives to ask for help. VA says it will request your DD214 when it receives your benefits application, and it can help gather records for your claim. Keep track of the one-year deadline from your intent to file. Start Here: Your VA Intent to File
One thing I tell veterans who are thinking about filing a VA benefits claim: start with your intent to file. Don't wait until you have every record together to learn about this step. An intent to file can establish a potential effective date for benefits while you gather information for your claim. It is not a completed claim, and it does not guarantee approval, back pay, or a specific effective date. Call VA at 1-800-827-1000, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern. Tell them you want to submit an intent to file and ask them to confirm the date recorded and your deadline. Save that information and set a reminder. You have 1 year after notifying VA of your intent to file to complete and submit your claim. This applies to disability compensation, pension, and Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) claims. It is not a blanket step for every VA benefit. If you're claiming different benefit types, VA says each needs its own intent to file. You can also submit online. Starting certain applications while signed in with an identity-verified VA.gov account automatically records an intent to file, so a separate form or call may not be needed. A VA-accredited VSO representative can help you check what applies to your situation. Official VA guide: https://www.va.gov/resources/your-intent-to-file-a-va-claim/ Veterans helping veterans. Welcome to Never Leave a VET - Start Here
Hey everyone, I'm JonCris Paguia. I'm a proud Navy veteran, husband, dad, nuclear medicine technologist, business owner, photographer, and real estate investor. I started this community with a simple goal: help a fellow veteran. Veterans helping veterans connect, build, and win. I want to be that connector who says, "This is what I did. This is what worked for me. Take what helps you." I'm building a lot, and I want to share the real journey, including what I'm learning and what doesn't work. What I'm working on: - New Leaf Housing: I co-founded this business to build shared and transitional housing opportunities, including for veterans and people who need stable housing. Our motto is "Where New Beginnings Live." - OC Rad Safety: My radiation safety consulting business. I help medical imaging teams with radiation safety programs, training, audits, and compliance. - JPRP Property Ventures: My real estate investing business, focused on renovations, rental strategies, and building long-term assets. - CashOut ATM Solutions: My ATM business and another part of learning how to build and run a business. - Flip.png: My photography and content work, from youth sports and family moments to business content. - YouTube and TikTok: I share sports, life, home renovations, and what I'm doing along the way. I also sell Superbox devices and have experience renting out a Tesla. I'm still learning as I go. This community is where I want to share those lessons and learn from you, too. We'll talk about being a veteran, life after service, housing, business, real estate, and creating content. Information is always free. The goal is to help each other, one connection at a time.
