Week of Sept 14: You're not short on knowledge. You're short on time.
Most candidates fail the clock, not the content. Here's what happens in the chair. Question 23 has a backwards stem: "Which of the following would NOT..." You read it twice. You start working it. Three minutes gone. You flag it, promise to come back, and never do. Then the last 15 questions get rushed at 40 seconds each, and that's where the exam gets you. That's a pacing problem, not a knowledge problem. You already proved you can do the work on the tools. The exam is testing whether you can do it on a timer, in a format built to trip you up. THIS WEEK'S DRILL: CLOCK DISCIPLINE Step 1: Grab the diagnostic or mock exam from your trade's course in the Classroom (or any practice exam you've got). Set a timer. Step 2: Hard rule, 90 seconds max per question. If you're not close, pick your best answer, flag it, and move on. Step 3: Drop a comment with your trade, your score, how many you flagged, and the ONE question type that ate your clock (calcs, code/reference lookups, backwards wording, troubleshooting, safety/regs). I'll reply to every comment by Friday with a fix for that one weak spot. Pacing rule to steal: Two passes. On the first pass, answer everything you know cold. On the second, work the flagged ones. Never let one hard question steal time from three easy ones. WANT MORE THAN THE DRILL? Not sure where your points are leaking? Book a $150 CAD Pass Plan. Send your last score report (or just your trade and exam date). Within 48 hours you get a written plan: where you're losing marks, how that maps to your exam weighting, and a dated study plan built back from your exam date. Then we walk through it on a 30-minute call. The $150 is credited in full toward coaching if you join. https://calendly.com/willnemo89/30min Writing in the next 90 days and serious about it? 1:1 coaching is $997 CAD + tax, application only. Reply "1:1" in the comments or DM me. Got this week's email with the old prices ($99 call, $597 coaching)? I'll honour those until January 1, 2027. DM me before you book or apply and I'll set you up at the old rate.

Your Red Seal is worth $4.99 an hour
New Substack is up, and the number in it is going to annoy some of you. $4.99 an hour. That's the honest step from 8th term to journeyperson on the BC inside-wire agreement - straight off the EJTC schedule, not an estimate. Which is exactly why "the raise" is a bad reason to book your exam. The gap that matters is the one to the classifications above journeyperson: $10.98 from 8th term, same page, and every one of them locked behind the ticket. If you're non-union or in Alberta, you can't look yours up. Run it: your rate, your journeyperson's rate, hours since your last write. Post your number in the comments. And if you haven't run the readiness quiz yet: https://will-doxbcyxm.scoreapp.com

Your Red Seal is worth $4.99 an hour
Book the date. Then study.
Quick one, and it's the thing I'd change first for most of you. I ask every person who comes to me the same first question: do you have an exam date booked, yes or no? It sounds like scheduling. It isn't. Every candidate I've coached to a pass had one of two things going in - a date on the calendar, or a failed attempt already behind them. Something real to aim at. Here's why it matters more than your study plan: Without a date, every topic looks equally important. So you study the parts you're already good at, because those are the ones that feel productive. Nobody voluntarily spends Sunday night on their worst block. A date is what forces you to. Without a date, there's no end either. You can prep for this exam for three years. People do. They know more than half the guys who passed and they still don't have the ticket. Book sixty days out if you can get it. That's enough to rebuild exam technique instead of cramming it. Under sixty and you're managing a sprint - still passable, just know that's what you're doing. Already failed? BC's 30-day rewrite wait starts from your last write, not from when you feel ready. If you failed two months ago and haven't rebooked, you already burned the waiting period doing nothing. So - post your exam date in the comments. Month and year is enough. If you don't have one, say "no date" and name your trade, and I'll tell you what I'd book if I were you. That thread is going to be more useful than anything else in here this week. Will
