BEFORE YOU GO SOLO: 5 Things Every Esthetician Needs to Know
Going solo can be one of the most exciting steps you take in your esthetics career. You get to create your own environment. You choose your services. You set your schedule. You decide how you want your clients to experience your brand. But there is something I want every esthetician to understand before making that transition: Being a solo esthetician does not mean you only have one job. When you become the owner of your own business, you are wearing multiple hats. You are the esthetician, but you’re also the marketing department, customer service department, purchasing department, operations manager, bookkeeper, receptionist, educator, and CEO. That is why being technically good at performing a facial is only one piece of becoming successful on your own. Here are five things I want you to seriously think about before you go solo. 1. TREAT YOUR BUSINESS LIKE A FULL BUSINESS One of the biggest mistakes I see estheticians make is treating their business like a place where they simply perform services. Your treatment room is not the entire business. Think about Target, Sephora, a hotel spa, or any other successful company. There are multiple departments working behind the scenes to make the customer experience possible. There is marketing. There is human resources. There is purchasing. There is inventory. There is customer service. There is accounting. There are operations. There is management. There is training and education. As a solo esthetician, you may not have employees handling those departments—but you still have those departments. Key Point #1: Learn to wear multiple hats. You might spend two hours performing services and then spend another hour answering messages, ordering supplies, creating content, cleaning your space, balancing your books, and following up with clients. That’s not “extra work.” That’s the business. If you only think about the treatment, you’re thinking like an esthetician. If you’re thinking about the treatment, the client experience, the money, the marketing, the supplies, the schedule, and the future of the company, you’re thinking like a business owner.
