Day 3/7
I think I’m starting to understand this one a little better.
I don’t think it’s one person’s voice.
I think it’s years of being taught that you have to be good, you have to do things properly, you have to have good manners, and you have to be perfect.
Then I went to chef school in Stellenbosch, where perfection was basically the standard.
And honestly, I wasn’t perfect enough.
Then I went into hospitality, working in five-star game reserves and that kind of environment, where perfectionism was key.
So I trained myself to be a perfectionist.
It became normal for me.
It became how I worked. How I showed up. How I measured whether I was doing a good job.
And now I’m in a completely different world where I don’t have to be perfect.
And I think I’m struggling with that.
Because somewhere along the way, I learned that mistakes mean you’re not good enough.
So now when I’m doing something new, I want to get it right before I even start.
I want to know what I’m doing.
I want to look like I have it together.
I want to make sure nobody can look at me and think, “She doesn’t know what she’s doing.”
And if I can’t guarantee that I’ll do it perfectly… sometimes I’d rather not do it at all.
That’s the part I’m really seeing now.
Maybe the voice isn’t saying, “Don’t do it.”
Maybe it’s saying, “Don’t do it unless you can do it perfectly.”
And wow… that changes things.
Because I’m starting to realise that what made me good at what I did before might not be what I need to take me where I’m going now.
Maybe I don’t need to get rid of that part of me.
Maybe I just need to teach her that good enough is allowed too. ❤️‍🔥
