Quick tip — how to remember the exact values table forever 🧠
Most students try to memorise the exact values table by brute force. There's a much better way. Here's the trick that makes it stick forever: For sin — count 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 then take the square root and divide by 2: sin(0°) = √0/2 = 0 sin(30°) = √1/2 = 1/2 sin(45°) = √2/2 sin(60°) = √3/2 sin(90°) = √4/2 = 1 For cos — it's exactly the same pattern but backwards: cos(0°) = √4/2 = 1 cos(30°) = √3/2 cos(45°) = √2/2 cos(60°) = √1/2 = 1/2 cos(90°) = √0/2 = 0 For tan — divide sin by cos: tan(0°) = 0/1 = 0 tan(30°) = (1/2)/(√3/2) = 1/√3 tan(45°) = 1 tan(60°) = (√3/2)/(1/2) = √3 tan(90°) = undefined That's it. How to actually use your formula sheet in the EA 📄
Every QLD Maths student gets a formula sheet in the EA. Most students barely use it. The top students treat it like a weapon. Here's the difference: ❌ What most students do: - Glance at it when they're stuck - Panic because they can't find what they need - Waste 2 minutes searching during the exam ✅ What top students do: - Study the formula sheet BEFORE the exam - Know exactly where every formula is - Use it to check their work, not find their starting point Here's your action plan: Step 1 — Get a copy of the QCAA formula sheet now Search "QCAA Maths Methods formula sheet" or "QCAA Specialist Maths formula sheet" on Google. Download it. Step 2 — Go through every formula on it For each one ask yourself: - Do I know what this formula is for? - Do I know when to use it? - Can I use it without looking at the sheet? Step 3 — Highlight the ones you always forget These are your priority revision items for the final week before the EA. Step 4 — Practise past papers WITH the formula sheet Get comfortable using it under timed conditions so it feels natural on exam day. The 3 most common mistakes in the Specialist Maths EA 🚨
Mistake 1 — Getting the cross product order wrong The cross product is NOT commutative. a × b = -(b × a) Most students know this in theory but forget it under exam pressure and lose marks on sign errors. Fix: always write out the determinant formula in full before calculating. Never try to do it in your head. Mistake 2 — Entering variance instead of standard deviation If X ~ N(μ, σ²) — the second number is the VARIANCE. But your calculator needs the STANDARD DEVIATION. So if you see N(50, 16) — enter σ = 4, not 16. This mistake alone costs thousands of students marks every year. Fix: every time you see a normal distribution — circle the variance, write the standard deviation next to it, THEN use the calculator. Mistake 3 — Forgetting the negative sign in the arccos derivative d/dx[arccos(x)] = -1/√(1 - x²) The negative sign is there. It always has been. And it gets dropped constantly. The #1 exam tip for Methods Paper 1 📝
Paper 1 is technology free — no calculator allowed. Most students panic about this. But here's the truth: Paper 1 rewards students who are organised, not students who are fast. Here's exactly what to do in the first 3 minutes of Paper 1: Step 1 — Read through the entire paper before writing anything Step 2 — Put a tick next to questions you can do immediately Step 3 — Put a star next to questions you need to think about Step 4 — Do all the ticked questions first Step 5 — Return to starred questions with remaining time Why does this work? Because easy marks at the start build confidence. And confidence in an exam is worth more than people realise. The students who struggle in Paper 1 are usually the ones who get stuck on question 3, spend 10 minutes on it, and run out of time before reaching the questions they actually know.
