Today I’m traveling back to California after a week in the Midwest—and for the first time, I won’t be traveling alone. My 19-year-old son is coming with me. He’s navigating that complicated space between adolescence and adulthood, and I’m navigating the equally complicated space between helping him and allowing him to find his own way. And whew…this has me feeling some kind of way! I help people move through fear, limiting beliefs, anxiety, and uncertainty all the time. But to my son, I’m not “Alaina the hypnotherapist.” I’m just Mommy the…Mommy! 😂 And in full transparency, that has me reaching for my “not good enough” glasses. If I can’t help my own son… Thankfully, I recognize those lenses. They are so familiar. So I’m switching them out for Certainty. I choose Certainty. This is his journey. I can support him and guide him, but I cannot force him. He has to walk his own path. Taking off our old glasses isn’t something we do once and never have to do again. Sometimes we have to notice them, remove them, and choose a different lens—over and over and over. I do believe it gets easier. And today, I’m grateful I caught myself wearing mine. What glasses have you caught yourself wearing lately—and what would you choose to wear instead?
