Daily Giveback 0137 - 401(k) vs. IRA vs. Roth IRA
Most people know these terms. Far fewer understand the difference. A 401(k) is an employer-sponsored retirement account. An IRA is an Individual Retirement Account that you can generally open independently. A Roth IRA is an IRA where qualified withdrawals in retirement can be tax-free. The big difference? When you get the tax benefit. Traditional retirement accounts generally give you the potential for a tax benefit today, with taxes generally paid when money is withdrawn. Roth accounts generally don’t give you the deduction today, but qualified withdrawals can be tax-free later. And a 401(k) may come with something extremely valuable. An employer match. That’s essentially compensation your employer may offer for participating in the plan. The point isn’t that one account is automatically better than another. The point is that different tools serve different purposes. Your 401(k) May Not Be Invested the Way You Think Here’s something that surprises a LOT of people: Having money in a 401(k) doesn’t necessarily mean you’re actually investing it the way you think you are. I’ve talked to people who have $50,000, $100,000, even $500,000 sitting in a 401(k) who couldn’t tell me: What they’re invested in. What they’re paying in fees. How much risk they’re taking. How their investments are performing. Or what happens to that money if they leave their employer. Your 401(k) is an account. It isn’t an investment. The money inside the account has to be allocated into investments. And those investments can have dramatically different levels of risk, fees and potential returns. This is why understanding your 401(k) matters. Don’t just ask “How much is in my 401(k)?” Ask “What exactly is my money doing?” You worked hard for that money. You should understand it. Daily Giveback 0135 - Cognitive Bias…
Most people think they believe things because they're true. The reality is usually the opposite. They think things are true because they already believe them. That's called cognitive bias. Truth doesn't always shape beliefs. Beliefs shape what people accept as truth. The fruit always reveals the root. And the fruit will always match the seed. Programming is a seed. I used to think cold plunges were terrible. Why? Because the first time I got in, it hurt. Then I learned about the benefits, endured the pain, and kept getting in anyway. Eventually something changed. The longer I stayed in, the more I liked it. The better I felt afterward. Nothing about the water changed. I changed. I replaced old programming with new programming. How much of your life is being controlled by programming you never chose? Your beliefs about money. Relationships. Success. Failure. Even yourself. Before you can remove bad programming, you have to recognize it. Guard your heart. Be intentional about the words you speak and the words you allow into your mind. Stop trying. Either do it or don't. Because today's seeds become tomorrow's harvest.
