Code Question of the Day:
You have a 20 amp branch circuit feeding a load that will run continuously for 3 hours or more.
What is the maximum continuous load you should place on that 20 amp circuit?
A. 12 amps
B. 16 amps
C. 20 amps
D. 25 amps
Here’s the important part: continuous loads are not treated the same as short-term loads. If a load is expected to run for 3 hours or more, the circuit has to be sized so it is not loaded beyond 80% of the breaker rating.

So for a 20 amp circuit: 20 amps x 0.80 = 16 amps
That means the correct answer is B. 16 amps.
This is one of those details that shows up on code tests, apprenticeship tests, journeyman tests, and in real-world design. The math is simple, but missing the word “continuous” changes the answer.
