Endeavouring to give hope to man who lost his infant daughter
(Essential Christian doctrine always come to the fore when preaching in the open air) I was preaching the gospel and handing out gospel leaflets in the centre of Redcar on the northeast coast of England on August 22nd. A passing couple did not wish to take a tract because they were Jehovah’s Witnesses (JW's). I asked them if they were going to heaven. They replied that they did not want to go to heaven, since this was reserved for an exclusive group of 144,000 people only, who, they argue, will rule over the earth from heaven following the Battle of Armageddon. All other believers will live on this earth, which they believe will become a paradise. JWs also argue that it is only these 144,000 who belong to the new covenant! It was really sad to hear someone say that he does not wish to go to heaven. There is much conflict between the teachings of the Watchtower organisation and what God has revealed in his written word, the Bible. The hope of the patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, was a heavenly hope, not an earthly one. We are told of them in Hebrews chapter 11 that “they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly (country)” (Hebrews 11:16). Also, “the Bible makes it clear that deceased believers are with the Lord in a spiritual realm called heaven” (1) . Paul, writing to the Philippians, speaks of his own death as being with Christ in heaven, as opposed to his remaining alive on this earth; he declares that he has "a desire to depart, and to be with Christ, which is far better” (Philippians 1:23). Similarly, writing to the Colossians, he tells them of “the hope which is laid up for you in heaven” (Colossians 1:5). In reality, 144,000 is a symbolic number denoting completion, referring in Revelation chapters 7 and 14 to all those from the 12 tribes of Israel (144,000 is a multiple of 12) who have trusted in Christ, and who are accordingly true Israelites, true sons of Abraham (see Galatians 3:29). JW’s tragically deny that all men have immortal spirits which live on after their physical death. So they argue that upon death the wicked cease to exist - that they are annihilated - and this means that JW’s also deny the existence of hell.

Our calling to be separate from the mainstream
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). This Christ-rejecting world despises those who do not conform, but to follow Christ means to come apart from this world and be separate. The world demands conformity to its favourite philosophies, for example, the idea that all religions are equally legitimate, that abortion is a woman’s right to choose, and that schoolchildren must be exposed to the LGBT agenda. As disciples of Christ, however, we are called to be separate. Prayer : O Lord, grant us the grace not to conform to the mainstream worldview and to the fashions of our day, but to come apart and be separate.

Greeting in the name of Jesus Christ
We can spread the fragrance of Christianity by living out its values in our daily lives. Showing love, kindness, and forgiveness to others, and being a positive example of Christ's teachings can inspire others to experience the beauty of Christianity. Sharing our faith through acts of service, sharing our personal testimonies, and inviting others to join in worship and community can also help spread the fragrance of Christianity.

There is no issue of life which God's word does not deal with.
Here we learn how rulers and governments are answerable to the one true Trinitarian God. Our focus text “Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold; and he said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt” (1 Kings 12:28). Jeroboam, for political expediency, exalts his own wisdom above God’s revelation by introducing the false religious practices of other nations. He is thus bringing down God’s judgement upon the land. This is precisely the problem in our own time : people, including political leaders, think that they have a superior wisdom to God’s word. They think that new developments in society can supersede God’s eternal law, that the word of God is no longer relevant in a progressive, 'enlightened', liberal and modern society. So fallen man has this tendency to exalt his own wisdom above that of God's revealed truth. Society now thinks that it can defy the laws of God with impunity. It thinks, for example, that it can decree that Britain is no longer a Christian country, but has become instead a multi-faith society, thus asserting, contrary to the Bible, that the Lord Jesus Christ does not possess all pre-eminence. Wherefore also God highly exalted him, and gave unto him the name which is above every name; that in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven and things on earth and 5things under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9,11).
