In 1980, after being turned down by 32 banks, Cathy Hughes and her then-husband Dewey Hughes bought WOL, a small Washington, D.C. radio station. As the debt piled up, Dewey gave her an ultimatum: move to California with him or get a divorce. She chose the station, filed for divorce, and bought out his share of the business. Then she lost her home and moved into the station. "I washed up in my public bathroom, I slept in a sleeping bag in my radio station office," she later told Radio Facts. For about 18 months she cooked on a hot plate while turning the empty side of the building into a makeshift apartment. In 1999, the company she built, Radio One (now Urban One), went public, making her the first African American woman to head a publicly traded company. What would you sacrifice to keep something you built?
