Kids Don’t Need Another Sideline
We did traditional sports in school. They’re great. Our son loved them and excelled and we're very thankful for all the people that put their time and effort in to make them possible. But they also have bottlenecks. Namely not enough coaches and not enough spots to play on game day. No matter how hard the coach tries, some kids still end up sitting on the sidelines. That’s a lesson in itself btw. But even if playing time could be made equal, there's still other factors like politics, favoritism, and nepotism that dictate play time as well. Our son felt that less — he’s a good athlete (when he feels like listening - haha) — but i know quite a few other kids and parents that felt it more. Wrestling was the only school sport I found that teaches most of the lessons you’ll need later in life. I still believe that. The problem with wrestling — and most wrestlers will probably agree — is you have to be a special kind of crazy to call the average practice room “fun.” Even if it were all bells and whistles, the coach-to-wrestler ratio is still a bottleneck that can't be fixed. Parents help but there still aren’t enough coaches to go around and kids end up falling through the cracks. Motorsports fixes that. Like wrestling, the main lesson is self-reliance. You get out of it exactly what you put in. Same as life. The difference is motorsports is actually fun. No politics. No favoritism. No nepotism. Doesn’t matter if Mom or Dad is the coach. Doesn’t matter if Grandpa’s a booster. Doesn’t matter what kind of family you come from. Not popular? Doesn’t matter. Too popular? Doesn't matter. None of that shit matters on the starting line. All that matters is who worked harder and who showed up better prepared. That’s the gap. Wrestling teaches the lessons. Motorsports teaches the same lessons but practice is fun. Motocross is athleticism and hard work. The slowest kid on the track is still learning something he’ll never get sitting on a football sideline. Grand Prix is endurance and hard work. There’s no better way for a young rider to blaze his own path than racing a 3–5 mile cross country course full of trees, rocks, hills, valleys, and terrain he’s never ridden. Figure it out alone, mile after mile.

Kids Don’t Need Another Sideline
Weekly Progress — week of Mon, Oct 12 to Sun, Oct 18
Big week. We started laying out the whole plan for 2027, and the first pieces are already moving. Monday - We kicked off The Full Picture, a five-part series on where Wild Rose is headed in 2027. - Part 1 shared the big news: Hidden Thorn has officially filed for federal 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. Tuesday - Part 2 went out on Facebook, Skool and X, with big things coming for the four-wheel crowd in 2027. - We sent funding inquiries to a community foundation and to the state's surplus property program. Wednesday - Part 3 was all about our crew. The folks who give up their weekends so our kids have somewhere to race deserve more than a pat on the back, so in 2027 we're moving to a mostly paid crew. - We reached out to a local Elks lodge about applying for a grant on Hidden Thorn's behalf. Thursday - Part 4 took our donation-only model further, with race fee sponsorships at the races our neighbors already host, not just at Wild Rose events. - We set the order for who gets those sponsorships first: first-time youth racers, then first-time racers of any age, then racing families with three or more racers, then everyone else. Friday - Our first 2027 race fee sponsorships went out, and we didn't even wait for 2027. The Chandler family is covered at ECMX Lewiston Supercross: Gunner, Trey and Blake, with Katie and Karter in STACYC. - All five Hidden Thorn board members signed off on the sponsorship order, so it's official. - Invites went out for the 2027 Frozen Rose Planning Party on Nov 7 at Hidden Thorn. It's an invite-only day, not open to the public, to get input from the people who race and test some ideas for the Frozen Rose next spring, with a bonfire after to close out 2026. If you didn't get an invite and think you should be there, send us a message. - We put together our big equipment wish list, priced out with real used prices. Saturday - We were at ECMX Lewiston Supercross on Saturday, and they did a great job as always! We cheered on the Chandler kids, our first 2027 race fee sponsorship: https://www.facebook.com/HiddenThornTrack/posts/pfbid02CB9FvjKtvd9DWb3vdtdhwdH45vKMtUwzWJjX9mcwL45MX27eMYZKmGdVxQZuxtRgl

The full picture: Expanding our donation-only model to help those around us (Part 4 of 5) In the beginning, people said I was crazy for trying to host a race on a donation-only basis. Then they said I was dumb to think I could make it work for a whole season. Then they said I was crazy AND dumb to think I could make it grow to multiple seasons. But here we are... And next year we're taking it even further: Our 2027 goal is to provide 100 race fee sponsorships to youth, first-time racers, and families with three or more racers entering our friends' events as well. And what better way to do that than to support the events that built this scene long before Wild Rose came around? These events – and the amazing people that host them – are where our race fee sponsorship support will be going. 1. Johnston's Mill (6c Motorcycle Club) 2. Mad Hatter (Timber Beast MX, 6c Motorcycle Club) 3. Richardson-Willis Motorcycle Massacre (Mark Fowler, 6c Motorcycle Club) 4. Trevor Haag Memorial (The Haag family, Bald Mtn Ski Hill) 5. ECMX Lewiston Spring and Fall GP 6. ECMX Lewiston Supercross (Youth only) 7. Fossil Bowl MX Series (Youth only) 8. St Joe Cycle Club has some awesome races we'd like to include as well so I hope to build a relationship with them before next season. More riders on the line at their races means a bigger, healthier scene for everyone. A rising tide lifts all boats! That's step four. Step five tomorrow. The full picture: why our crew is going from volunteer to paid in 2027 (Part 3 of 5) If you've been to a Wild Rose race, you've seen them. The folks running the flags, parking trucks, scoring riders, keeping the pits moving and cleaning up long after the last bike rolls out. None of it happens without our crew. From the start my goal has been to transition from an almost entirely volunteer crew to a mostly paid crew. I'm happy to report that goal will mostly be met by 2027 as well. Most of the people that help us are very quick to remind us that they're not doing it for money anyways, and we appreciate that to no end. But we wanted to make this step a priority because no matter how much we try to show our appreciation, social media "thank you's" don't pay the bills. These are the people who give up their weekends so our kids and families have somewhere to race. They deserve more than a pat on the back, and in 2027 they'll get it. That's step three. Step four tomorrow. Also on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HiddenThornTrack/posts/pfbid034SHYX8dQrsj5MQLwe3oC2aP1Ysgx1GTQweBikDuAvRerLwfDmiHTw17XJqGoDwQul

The full picture: big things coming for four-wheel racing in 2027 (Part 2 of 5) Yesterday I shared step one: Hidden Thorn filed for 501(c)(3) nonprofit status so we can get more kids and families into motorsports. Today's piece is for the four-wheel crowd. If you're into the four-wheel stuff, 2027 is going to be a very cool year. We're working with our existing partners to expand our four-wheeled fun to include dirt drags and tuff truck. And we can't give out many details yet but there's another partnership announcement coming in the next month or so that's going to shake up the motorsports scene in Idaho and the Northwest in a massive and positive way. The Hidden Thorn and Wild Rose community will have front row access to it. When that happens, the Wild Rose won't just be a fun and positive outlet for those that want it. It'll provide pathways for those that want to dive into the sport on a deeper level. That's step two. Step three tomorrow.
