Advice for beginners?
Imagine someone is starting learning mixing or mastering today. What's the one piece of advice you'd give them to help them succeed faster?

@Bayard Kohlhepp Totally agree! I'll bet we've all got far more than we need, and we bought them in the belief that they were the vital solution to some perceived problem, yet we've barely used them because it wasn't true. I'd say, get good sounds in the first place and you won't need many plugins, but when you do need them there are versions in your DAW that will get you there if you know how to use them. If you watch the Mastering.com event replays you'll see huge plugin lists, which makes us think we need them, but we don't, and neither do the guys we're watching. It comes down to things like ease of use, speed, convenience, and subtle differences that we can't even hear (yet). Start with good sounds, learn your DAW's plugins, then use them wisely.

@Terry Patrick III If you're a bit lost, try finding the past 'fix the mix' events here and watch a few of them. They're really helpful in explaining you what Mastering.com is all about and why, then working through a mix to get it ready. They're usually in sets of 3 (that take place over 3 days) and each episode is about 2h long. The mixer who takes on the challenge is an expert and explains what they're doing and why it is needed. If you're not keen on the song or style, try another one. After watching a few of those you'll have picked up tons of valuable advice, and there's a new one every few weeks. Look for them here at Skool under Classroom, or at Mastering.com under Free Courses/Event Replays

I've noticed several times when "time" becomes an issue. Things get changed and people get confused as to what time a thing is going to happen in their location. Why don't you switch to 24 hour UTC time? That way everyone knows what time the event will be occurring even if they are traveling. People in fixed locations can simply learn their offset. Or they can simply type in... "What time is it in [ my city ] at 17:30 UTC 11/15/2026? Most everyone's phone, tablet, computers are tied to UTC and they will get an exact time. Aviation is all tied to UTC/Zulu. 2026-09-28T16:52:00Z Year-Month-Day(T=Time)Hour(in 24 format):Minute:Seconds(Zulu = tied directly to UTC:00:00) But again any search engine can convert normal spoken words. So "The show starts at 13:00 ( 1PM ) UCT on October 2nd" works just fine. If you live on east coast USA that's 9AM EDT 10/02. If you live in Madrid it's 15:00 ( 3PM )11/02 When a contest ends "at midnight" it's much more easily understood and can not be improperly calculated if the contest ends at 23:59 UCT 10/01/2026. It would simply eliminate all confusion even as time zones change through travel or seasonal standard vs daylight savings. Also it seems to me if you had an instructor in different time zone or a mentor call and one party or both need to quickly coordinate a time. Anyway just a thought. If it saved everyone a couple minutes on all the varied communications, videos, etc., it would seem worth it in the long run.

Its only an opinion and YMMV, but I'd say that we should all be willing to take on the responsibility of working out the time, rather than being spoon-fed every last detail. If we can't get that right there's no hope for the rest because its probably the easiest thing to learn here. 😀 Personally, I've no idea what UTC is but whatever time standard is posted I'd still need to convert (as would most others), so what's the difference? Columbus just got on with it (although he wasn't very good at time or navigation apparently 🤣).
Is this real, or a mistake, or something else ?
Hi, I just had an email, supposedly from Mastering.com saying... Hey there, Rob here from Mastering.com. I'd love to get your thoughts on your recent purchase: NYC Drums Would you be open to leaving a quick review? If so, here's your unique link: https://courses.mastering.com/review?product=31 Thanks for your time, it's much appreciated. Cheers, Rob CEO - Mastering.com You were sent this email because you recently purchased a product from Mastering.com. I've NOT purchased NYC Drums or anything else, so why would I get this? Any thoughts?

Thanks for the replies Tom, Peter and Victor. I hope the multiple occurrences trigger some investigation back at HQ.

I wasn't expecting an apology, but it would be re-assuring for those who got the erroneous messages to know that it was a genuine bug/error rather than something more sinister. Also, in the worst circumstances it would be useful to know whether my data has been compromised so I could be more guarded in future. As for reviews, I guess tedious "How did we do?" messages are part of modern marketing, but I agree that all subscriptions should offer more opt-out choices. Thankfully, I've not been overwhelmed by Mastering.com so far, and the email in question seeking feedback was polite (unlike most that are worded more like demands than requests).
