How to Know When to Increase Your Training
Our training philosophy is built around one question: How high can you SOAR? SOAR represents the four pillars we use in our training: Stress, Optimize, Adapt, Recover. One of the biggest mistakes we see athletes make is adding more stress, or the wrong kind of stress, before they’ve actually adapted to the training they’re already doing. When it comes to increasing training volume, athletes often add more simply because they feel good or think they need to, not necessarily because they’ve earned it. Before adding more, you need to be consistent with your current training, handle the workload well, and give your body enough recovery time to adapt. Too much, too soon is one of the easiest ways to end up injured. What are you currently trying to increase: distance, frequency, speed, strength, or all of the above?

@Mason McLain always putting in that work! If you don’t have any more races this year and are entering more of the off-season, this is a great time to work on those areas. I’d put more of an emphasis on speed and strength right now, with a secondary focus on distance. Then as your races get closer, you can start shifting more of that focus back towards distance and race-specific work.

Good luck this weekend! Which race are you doing? I would lay everything out so it’s easy to see and grab. You don’t want everything piled on top of each other if you’re able to set up your transition area and lay your gear out. You also don’t want it just stuffed all in a bag. Thats going to take time to go through everything and grab what you need. Look for landmarks that will help you easily identify where your transition spot is so you’re not wasting time running around looking for your stuff. I like to lay everything out in the order that I’m going to grab it and put it on. This helps make sure I don’t miss anything and makes it quicker and more efficient. Any nutrition you plan on taking in during the bike portion put directly on the bike ahead of time. That way you don’t have to waste time grabbing it and putting it into your pockets during transition. Sometimes the pockets on tri suits are small and difficult to get things into, so I like to eliminate that step if I can by putting my nutrition in a top-tube bag or another easily accessible spot on the bike. Transitions are also something you should practice in training. Practice setting everything up and going through the same sequence you’ll use on race day so you can find an order that works best for you and become quick and efficient at it. Transitions are one of the easiest areas of a triathlon to save time because you can get faster without adding any extra physical effort. If you’re wanting to get serious about triathlon that’s an area you’ll want to master for sure.
