Why Status Symbols Simply Aren't...
I can't remember where I originally heard this, but it seems to be something a lot of people have either forgotten or never heard... The people that matter aren't impressed by things, they are only impressed by people. A Rolex on a random wrist means nothing more than a receipt. The important factor isn't the watch, but the wrist. Any interesting watch on an impressive gentleman's wrist becomes a status symbol - because of the wrist that's wearing it. There's a reason the phrase, "an empty suit," even exists. It's because the suit doesn't make the man; the man - or woman, for that matter - makes the suit. Buying things that a significant number of people can purchase does not impart status. Striving to be the best version of yourself, however, demonstrates a status that cannot be purchased...

@Nicholas Bailey This is what most people think of when they think of status symbols - that it indicates money. But this is a shallow interpretation of status. Real status is indicative of character and accomplishment. And that can't be bought, or stolen, or inherited - it must be built from the inside out. A wealthy douchebag is still a douchebag...
Undershirt Collars Debate: Crewneck or V-neck?
I'm buying a new white dress shirt soon and was wondering about undershirt collars: Crewneck or V-neck? Traditionally, we have all worn Crew-Neck shirts. However, I have been leaning more toward V-neck shirts whenever I buy a solid-color T-shirt. I think the difference is that these newer V-necks aren't cut down so low that you look like Patrick Swayze 😇 in the 80s & 90s. Do any of you gentlemen wear V-Neck undershirts?

I'm v-neck all the way, as a general rule. An undershirt generally shouldn't be seen, so a v-neck allows a button or two to be undone while still hiding from view. And since I'm wearing a tie when the buttons on a dress shirt are all buttoned, the tie obscures the fact that I'm wearing a v-neck undershirt. For t-shirts, I'm still pretty much v-neck all the way. One, a v-neck simply looks better than a crew neck; it frames the face better. Two, I have a beard - so a v-neck matches my overall head shape better. Three, I like wearing necklaces, and a v-neck is a better accompaniment for that.
OOTD 2026-08-19: Going Out In Green...
This evening's outfit is built around my newest flat cap - an olive green, Irish linen, Donegal touring cap by Hanna Hats. It's hard to see, but the white, cotton, seersucker shirt has a subtle, floral pattern in a light green.

Getting my Fall jam on a little early
I don't know about you guys, but Fall is by far my favorite season here in the Chicagoland area. You get to wear great shirts, boots, jackets and coats. I'm breaking into my Fall stuff a little early. Today I'm wearing my Timberland Pro pants, Smith Mills flannel, Hamilton Khaki King watch, and one of my pair of Asolo hiking boots. If you do any resl hiking or orienteering like I do, you owe it to yourself to try a pair of Asolo boots. They are true hikers, not your typical Merrell, Keen, or Salomon (although some of the Salomon boots are actually quite capable hikers, just not quite as hard core as the Asolo's) Wednesday is typically my last day of the week in the office as I'm generally remote on Thursday and Friday. I'll get back to my Wednesday suit days soon, too. Warner

Fall? The heat index has been close to 110 degrees here for the past few days... Our seasons coming up, after this blazing hot summer we're in now, will be: - Tornado Season - More Summer - Is That Fall? (Three Days) - Just kidding, it's still Summer! - Actual Fall (One week, two if we're lucky.) - Gray & Wet - Winter (Cold & Wet)

I spend almost every day trying my best to make computers behave better than they did the day before - and I've been doing that for decades...
