Will Dietary Fat Make You Fat?
Can a high fat Carnivore diet really cause excessive fat gain? Or is this just mainstream nonsense entering the Carnivore community?
Will Dietary Fat Make You Fat?

That depends, is the question regarding a strict carnivore or lion diet lifestyle? The question is pretty general. Answer, if eating a SAD type diet, then Yes, dietary fat can indeed make one store fat and gain adipose tissue. If eating a strict carnivore style diet, chances are eating more fat and less protein will assist with fat loss. The body can only intake so much fat at once and the satiety signal will shut down consumption. This is when eating more saturated animal fats can increase fat loss. The body converts to burning fats as fuel and becomes efficient at it and when the intake of mass of food (and daily energy requirements) reduces it will switch to utilizing its own stores to make up the difference in needs.

@Patricia Walters true statement. It is very difficult to consume enough dietary fats that will increase adipose tissue without any exogenous carbohydrates or sugars pushing the insulin and glucose crash button. Highly unlikely one could consume enough fats to cause that effect. Complete Satiety and/or ‘the quicks’ are the most likely results especially when including rendered fats. What some may get confused with this is that when someone says they are following a ‘high fat’ carnivore diet it should be clarified that the fat intake is not increased to a level that is far greater then what the body requires in a day ; the protein (meat) is reduced so that the fat intake is a larger percentage of the total daily requirements. This creates more satiety, energy and conversion to utilizing fats for energy and cellular function. The body then prioritizes using that energy to complete functions like mitophagy and cellular repair. It can also mimics a fasted state when done correctly. We do not always need to fast to achieve similar results (although fasting is superior and faster for this intention). (Side note: I follow the rule of age. If someone is over 60, more sedentary or already in a deficit, fasting needs to be approached carefully or greater losses can occur that can create a worse effect.) If someone is involved in athletics or heavy resistance training this is more difficult as the protein turnover rate is much higher. The high fat approach needs me to be cycled on and off to allow for proper repair and recovery.
Clinging to Supplements 💊🫨
They cannot let go of their supplements stack even while eating a species appropriate diet, based in red fatty meat. What's your take as a coach, and what does the conversation with the supplement clinging client look like?

Education. They will require proof of what is in the meats and how it compares to their supplements. Send them information on how poorly most supplements are absorbed and utilized compared to the natural sources like meat and fat. We must remember that indoctrination and belief is a difficult thing to change and it can only happen through understanding.
Does protein make you fat?
An interesting question from one of our students! How would you respond? 🤔

@Lauren Stolpe hi. Cortisol spikes in the morning can increase insulin as well. It helps give us the ‘get up and go’ we need first thing when we wake up, lol.

@James Newmeyer very accurate. I was consuming 250-300 grams of protein a day and never felt better, stronger or clearer. Our bodies are intelligent and will tell us what we need.

Diet is only one aspect of overall health. If we have other modalities that may support one’s overall wellbeing, we should offer and utilize. One often missed proponent of our ancestors health was that they walked bare foot far more then we do today. Maybe that is one reason they experienced better health and not just from better food. We should be open to other potential.
When they FALL OFF the plan!
How do you approach a client who has fallen off the planned approach to the Carnivore Diet? If it's a first time occurrence vs recurring, in what ways does the approach shift?

We all stumble. Get back up and carrie on, learning to walk is a process and when we change our shoes, it can take time to figure out how to walk in them. Sometimes we go back to the old shoes for comfort even though the new ones support our feet much better. The new shoes can make our feet sore and we can only use them for short periods. Over time, as we are able to use them more, we learn they support our feet, and as a result our body better, we begin to wear them more and more until they become our shoe of choice. The transition is always an individual journey and must always be respected. We are not dictators of health, we are teachers.
