Lately, I’ve been asking almost everyone I meet to take off their sunglasses when we talk, so I can see their eyes. I hate talking to a pair of shades without seeing the person’s eyes. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. And it really does feel completely different when you can look someone in the eye during a conversation. But since it’s the end of summer and still very bright outside, almost everyone tells me the same thing: “The light is too strong. The glare bothers my eyes.” Aha!!! Isn’t that interesting? Aren’t we part of nature? Haven’t human beings lived under the sun for our entire existence? Look at Indigenous cultures and traditional communities around the world. Sunglasses are a very recent invention in human history. Since meeting Meir Schneider almost two years ago, I’ve gradually stopped wearing sunglasses in the sun. At first, it was difficult. For the first couple of weeks, wearing a cap was a must. But over time, my experience of sunlight changed. And now I feel much more connected to the natural world around me — to the earth, to the light, and to the sun. It’s an amazing feeling. In my next post, I’ll explain what happens inside the eye as light changes throughout the day. And it may surprise you. Who here is addicted to sunglasses?
