Optex Super Build 4:1 Polyester Primer Surfacer
Anyone have experience with this Primer? It's supposedly a hybrid Epoxy Polyester primer. Before joining Make it Match, I purchased a gallon of this stuff for my current build (Fiberglass body dune buggy). I just read through the classroom section on primers and learned that Polyester may not be the best primer to use on Fiberglass. Looking at the TDS, it does include Fiberglass in the substrates its suitable for. Would love to know your thoughts @Aaron Jokela and I apologize for the number of questions lately. Seems that every Saturday I have other commitments that I can't join the weekly call. BTW TDS sheet link is here

I’ve sprayed about a gallon of the Optex SuperBuild 4:1 primer on refrigerator refinish projects and also on a hail damaged hood with really good results. I like the color change characteristics of the primer, which allows you to quickly identify low spots. I sprayed the primer using my Sata spray gun with a 2.5 tip. I trust the TDS, but used epoxy primer on bare metal and let it cure fully and sanded it before moving on the optex superbuild. I’ve never used it on fiberglass. FYI, If you are delayed sanding the Optex it starts turning more gray in appearance, but you can still use the color difference to identify low spots. Hope this helps. Bill

My project truck, El Guapo, is a 1986 F150 that was started back in 2010 and has been in pieces for the last 16 yrs. I took it to a guy who was going to paint it, but things happened, and after it was stripped and sprayed with primer, he moved back to California. I was left with a truck in primer, and no good way to finish it. That was 2014. Fast forward 12 yrs and I have it ready for paint. I built a paint booth and I'm now ready to get it done. A couple days ago, I finished the interior with epoxy and a couple coats of a single stage hot rod black. The next day, I did the inside of the cowl, hit it with seam sealer, and a couple coats of hot rod black. This morning, I sprayed the underside of the hood and the inside of the doors with black SPI Epoxy sealer followed by Tamco Shadow blue metallic (code 7B) and Tamco clearcoat. It's not perfect, but it came out pretty decent, and for my first attempt at painting a vehicle, I'll take it.

Looks fantastic Ron, great job! I’m impressed with the paint booth. What types of fans did you finally get installed for the exhaust?
AkzoNobel Sealer question
I was looking for Lesonal Primer Pro at a local AkzoNobel distributor. Was told they didn’t carry it but they offered this as an alternate solution ( see picture). They said it’s only offered in black or white, so I’d have to buy two cans and mix to get the desired target shade. They said it could be mixed as a filler primer or sealer. Wondering if anyone has experience spraying this product and if it lays down smooth as a sealer. They told me I could drive an hour up the road to another store that does carry Lesonal Primer Pro, if I wanted it.

Thanks for the feedback on the primer. I don’t recall seeing Wanda on their shelves, so perhaps you’re right about it being the replacement product line.

@Chris Kiefer thanks, I’ll look for his video!
Test panel - playing with colors for current build for the wife
This is a mini hood that I got at an airbrush workshop several years ago. it's an aluminum panel stamped into a hood shape but it's about half size. Think the actual width is 28" or so. Mainly did this panel to keep me motivated while I slog through the body work and mechanical issues on a build I'm doing for the wife - A fiberglass bodied dune buggy. Wanted to see if I liked the main blue color (and I do). The base is Tamco's slick silver coarse metallic silver. The darker blue is Tamco' SoCal Candy. The lighter tealish blue is Tamco Monaco candy. This hasn't been cleared yet and it may never get that far- I'm gonna experiment a bit with some interference pearls in hopes of a ghost effect of flowing water. - Anyway, I thought I'd share. Apologies for the crap photo.

Super nice job, I love the colors!! I really like the way you did the taping for all the stripes and accents you painted. What is your cleaning technique after base and before adding clear? I assume this takes hours of work and not sure how you treat metallics and pearls that may be used, since you can’t tack rag them, right? Also wondering about the timing since you’re in the recoat window of the original basecoat you sprayed.

Thanks Randy, that’s an interesting technique. I haven’t used an intercoat clear before.
Replica stickers
Aaron, As a follow up to our discussion at the live session today, here are the pics of the vehicle stickers. If you could share the name of the company that can reproduce these, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Bill
