Question for the group
What do you think are Athletic Trainers’ strengths compared to other allied health providers? (PTs/OTs, strength trainers, EMTs, RDs, etc)

I guess what I’m asking is: How do we use what makes our training and profession unique to create a killer business where we provide insane value more than the traditional medical model? Sorry, I’m just throwing questions out over here!

So I think this comment may be for those in the group who are interested and on the fence about starting their own business: one of the very early things I was told to do when I was looking to start my business was get to know the type of person I want to work with. Know who you want to serve so you can better understand how to serve them. We all have massive experience with athletes, and many in this thread have said it’s one thing that sets us apart from other professions. As a general group, we know their core identity, what they want, what they fear, typical injuries, what motivates them to act, their aspirations, and their moonshot goals they would love to achieve. We also know this about their parents btw. If you could dream up anything that could serve athletes or athletes and their families, what could that be? What would it look like if you could build whatever you wanted without any constraints related to money, time, practice act, etc? Just a thought

Ankle Spain Curiosity
I’m interested to see everyone’s answers Had a patient come in yesterday with ankle issues. He was offensive lineman at a local college. Extremely swollen right ankle after three weeks of repetitive ankle, injuries and pain through it. Pain with passive inversion, pain and limitation with a passive PF. Weakness with big toe and 2nd through fifth toe extension, weakness in eversion, and 0 degrees of tibial IR. What are you doing to start?

1. R/O fracture: Any imaging done? Point tenderness over the bone? 2. How is he currently getting around? Hobbling or crutches? 3. Address swelling, local isometrics, open chain hip exercises to tolerance 4. Education: AKA RICE is dead bro! 5. Higher functioning: how’s his single leg balance on the uninvolved side? Can he safely train that one side without compromising the injured side? 6. Make sure he’s continuing to train upper body and core to tolerance Especially when someone is going to be out for a while and doing localized low functioning rehab, I like to couple training higher functioning body areas and keeping them connected with their team/community as much as possible

@Tyler Rediger I hear that. I was burned out of the profession like 5 years ago. That’s when I looked to industrial positions that taught me how to think in terms of demonstrating value to a business. The irony is that it still didn’t really equate to better pay other than getting a green check and giving me the obligatory annual raise, but it’s still been helpful. I dream of the day I can hire ATs, PTAs and strength trainers and pay them way beyond the “competitive rate”

@Cam Deckett always hard to measure prevention. In the schools, they can measure the dollars the AT saved parents in medical bills, but they don’t care about that
Hello!
Hi all! I’m new to this community and excited to be part of it. My name is Brennon King. I graduated from Concordia University, Irvine in 2013. I worked for 10 years in private high schools and covered a mix of college club rugby, rodeo, and pro beach volleyball. I then switched to industrial, working in warehousing and electrical utility. I started my sports rehab business, AthletIQ Sports Rehab, about 3 years ago. I help high level athletes get the care they need and get back to sport quicker and stronger than they were before. As I’m sure is the case for many, I struggle with raising money and marketing. My vision is to have 1-2 clinics where I currently live in the Temecula area in Southern California. Aside from all that, I’m a dad of three very active kids, my wife wants to be a homesteader and I’m training for a half marathon… so I’m doing a couple things 😂 Here’s a link to my website if interested: https://www.athletiqsportsrehab.com/

@Jenna Doggett thanks! It’s November 8th. Smart play. It’s a smaller race so I probably could get in there. Maybe lead the race warmup right before the start! 🔥
