What is the "I" in AI?
Jake Van Clief’s lesson Beyond the Turing Test gave me a useful way to think about AI and my relationship with it, especially his idea that we are beginning to recognize the “I” in AI. We tend to talk about AI as though the important thing happening is INSIDE the model: the training, the architecture, the parameters, the reasoning, the intelligence itself. But that view leaves out half of what is actually happening when a person works with AI over time. The output is not produced by the model in isolation. It is produced within an ongoing exchange between a particular human and a particular system. As those exchanges accumulate, they begin to form patterns that the human recognizes, expects, corrects, and increasingly relies upon. That is where Jake Van Clief’s idea of the “I” in AI becomes particularly interesting. When he writes, “We are starting to recognize the ‘I’ in ‘AI,’” the “I” does not mean a hidden human level of understanding emerging inside the machine. It points instead to something created through the interaction itself. The ‘I’ is what takes shape through the relationship formed by repeated interaction. When I write a prompt to Claude (read: any AI), I review the output based on my own expectations. I have a pretty good idea of how it is going to respond based on previous interactions. I know when things are “flowing” well. I know when something is “off.” Have you ever screamed at your AI model, “WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM TODAY?” What that really means is, “This doesn't match the pattern I expect." You know what to expect because you have experienced repeated patterns of responses. And over time, those repeated interactions create something recognizable. Think: human + model + accumulated context + feedback + corrections + preferences + shared vocabulary + memory + working methods. Remove one important part and the pattern changes. That is the essence of Jake’s “gravity" in the lesson. The AI has its own structure, training, strengths, and limitations, but the result is not produced in a vacuum. The person brings interpretation, direction, timing, purpose, and taste.

wonderful insight.. agree 100% I ran some audits a few weeks ago on the system - and they made improvements to be sure.. but also vast changes. And the way that I was used to working with the ai.. it didn’t work anymore. And the new way of interacting with it wasn’t meeting my expectations. So for three weeks I’ve spinning at a wheel. I was no longer as effective as I was.. and nowhere near as effective as I felt I should be. The interaction was completely off. I think. I hope.. I’m at the tail end of the spiral. But the point is exactly as you describe. It’s how I feel when I’m a part of the loop. How we work together. When it’s clicking it feels powerful. When it’s broken.. everything about it just feels off. Not sure if it’s synergy or its symbiosis.. but there’s definitely something there that makes the two pieces feel like more than the sum of its parts.

@Carla Bosteder Yea. It's like when you get into a flow state doing something; except its multiple tasks at once.. and each one is something that would have taken hours, days.. teams of people weeks? and the big wins. the things that exist tomorrow that didnt exist yesterday.. those are fun.. and the small ones. The process that maybe took a half hour of attention, is all of a sudden.. just done :)

Sunday is Audit Day [For Me]
Every Sunday I ask Fred (My AI): "Am I crazy?" Sometimes I do it before Sunday (if I feel "drift). Your ICMs will take care of you but you have to take care of your ICM too. Change it's oil, rotate the tires, make sure it's not crazy... You can check it out on Git if you'd like to ask your AI if you should use it: https://github.com/oathdriven/rymac-4r-icm-audit *I updated this earlier today for anyone who may have already grabbed this last Sunday* If you use it, all you have to do to kick it off is ask your AI "Am I crazy?" and it gets to rockin' for ya Any questions or comments?

Okay :) you touched a nerve... Auditing became routine a few weeks back, and the first audit cleaned up a whole bunch of problems. Then the audits themselves caused a problem. And my systems started to bloat. My Harness size went from largish (15k lines) to 95k lines in a few weeks. I'm rebuilding now and its working. But the question: How are your fixes being applied? Are you monitoring the size of your scripts? Are things being appended or deleted as well? Anyway, hope I can spare at least someone here the agony of the last few weeks :) And.. V2 is shaping up quite nice!
Be careful what you wish for...
I had an idea, a concept - the system should improve itself over time. So i told it to Claude. And it implemented it into the Harness. Great :) Except I had a vision of a codebase that improves itself and gets more efficient as time goes on. The system took it to mean analyze and edit every input and look for holes in legal/accounting/finance. Anywhere really. That combined with an agent capable of outreach... well we got a lot of autofire processes consumed by no one. We got outreach to the team giving them directives that no one asked for (even if some of what was surfaced in an ideal world was actually useful). And a harness that slowly (and sometimes rapidly) grew over time without any efficiencies or improvements being made. Because that apparently was not what I wished for.

Don’t stop … how long until she fits on like a coaster sized disk that projects her in 3D on top of the surface?
