This play probably won’t show up on a “game-winning plays” list. And that’s exactly why it matters. It wasn’t the 4th quarter. It wasn’t a game-saving block. It wasn’t late in the game. It wasn’t even the second half. It was early in the second quarter, with the score still in the single digits. The offensive player had a head start and a wide-open path to the basket. Most players might see the play developing, decide they’re beaten, and let it go. Not Ethan. He hustled back. He never quit on the play. And he made an incredible block off the backboard. But here’s the thing: the block itself isn’t the lesson. The lesson is that Ethan played that way every possession. He sprinted back. He competed. He chased loose balls. He made the extra effort. He refused to assume a play was over. And in a game they ultimately won by 2 points, those little moments matter. One play doesn’t win a basketball game. Games are built possession by possession, through hundreds of decisions, efforts, stops, rebounds, cuts, screens, closeouts and extra efforts. Research on close basketball games consistently points to defensive execution and successful possessions as important differentiators between winning and losing teams. So when you watch this block, don’t just watch the block. Watch the decision to keep running. Because you never know which possession will matter. That’s the art of never giving up. Be like Ethan. Don’t wait for the 4th quarter to start playing like every possession matters. Play like it matters now. 🏀 Trainer: @Logan Hinton, a former 5 year pro across three countries. Train Like a Pro!
