Something nobody talks about enough in recruiting 🏒
What happens if your daughter gets injured during her recruiting year? This is one of the fears I hear from hockey families most and we heard it firsthand from Gabby Jones on the webinar — I want to address it directly because the way most families handle it actually makes things worse. The biggest mistake: going silent. When an injury happens during recruiting, most families pull back. They stop emailing coaches. They go quiet on social media. They wait until she's healthy to pick things back up. Coaches notice that silence. And not in a good way. Here's what to do instead. The moment you know the timeline — send a short email to every coach who has shown genuine interest. Something like: "I wanted to reach out and let you know [player name] is dealing with an injury. Her timeline is [X weeks]. She is working hard on her recovery and more committed than ever to the process." That email does three things. It shows maturity. It shows communication skills. And it shows a player who doesn't disappear when things get hard — which is exactly who coaches want in their locker room. Then use the time. Strengthen her academic profile. Update her film with footage from before the injury. Deepen the relationships she already has with coaches who are interested. Work on the mental side of her game. The thing I want you to hear most: How a player handles adversity tells a college coach more about who she is than any highlight reel ever could. An injury during recruiting is not the end of the story. In the right hands it becomes the chapter that shows exactly what kind of person she is. Has anyone navigated this?
