Match #75 decides the champion of the main bracket—and I'm still not entirely sure I've made the right decision. It's my favorite spring/summer fragrance, Terre d'Hermès Eau Givrée, against my favorite autumn/winter fragrance, Tom Ford Ombré Leather. I've leaned both ways over the past several hours. Even as I'm writing this, I'm wavering. This is where I really wish I had Michelle here to break the tie. Eau Givrée is already thoroughly Michelle-approved. In fact, she chose it for me so often during my last trip to Hong Kong that I completely emptied my travel atomizer. Ombré Leather hasn't had the Michelle test yet because I don't have a travel spray for it. That's something I'll need to correct. Eau Givrée has been the revelation of this tournament for me. That brilliant citron, juniper, and Timut pepper opening is wonderfully refreshing, but it's the way the mineral and woody elements emerge underneath that has made me love it. It's bright without being simplistic and sophisticated without losing that sparkling freshness. Ombré Leather is nearly its mirror image: dark, rich, smooth leather surrounded by cardamom, amber, patchouli, jasmine, and moss. It's luxurious, powerful, and beautifully blended. In cooler weather or for a date night, I'm not sure I own anything I'd rather wear. So how do I separate two fragrances that are almost perfect for completely different purposes? Barely. Other than the considerable difference in price, the one distinction I can find is versatility. Eau Givrée simply gives me more opportunities to wear it during the year. And apparently that's enough. Terre d'Hermès Eau Givrée wins Match #75 and becomes champion of the main bracket. Tom Ford Ombré Leather drops into the second-chance bracket, where it awaits the winner of tomorrow's matchup. Three challengers remain, but Eau Givrée now sits alone at the top. And if you're a betting man, I wouldn't put much money on any of them knocking it off. But considering how much I've changed my mind during this tournament, I probably shouldn't be trusted with betting advice.

I’m curious, what is some of your guys initial impressions of a scent that you were not crazy about at first, but now really love it and wear it a lot? For me that scent is Givenchy Society Sport I really like the clean soapy feel with a bite now. I keep coming back to smell. What fragrances has everyone else done a 180 on?

A new full bottle addition to my collection that I am absolutely thrilled to finally have. Musky, iris, leather, amber, woody, spicy, and slightly boozy. Think niche-level Dior Homme Parfum 2014, with an even smoother blend and more depth. It is a crown jewel in my collection!

First of all: if you are a collector or an enthusiast who started to buy more niche fragrances after hundreds of designers, this one is still absolutely worth a try. This perfume is all about cashmere with a creamy sandalwood on the dry down. Great quality, absurdly cheap. The opening is more about dry woods, a little metallic, but the dry down is soapy, creamy, and envelops you like a hug. Leans masculine but is easily shareable. If you like perfumes like Escentric Molecules M05, it’s a no-brainer. I paid $16.99 at Marshall’s, but you can find it easily around $20 at discounters. From Escentric Molecules, I have the E03 and E05, and in terms of quality, it feels like a close cousin.

My local Marshall’s has been popping off with some great finds. Tonight they had South Slope, a bunch of Tumi Awaken and Kinetic bottles, several of the Ferragamo leather flankers, and Given by Reserve Privee. But the find of the night for me was Maison Margiela Replica Lazy Sunday Morning. It’s been on my wish list for a long time. I used up the sample over a year ago, and love the easy, clean linen fragrance for casual days and mornings at home. It retails for $170 and usually falls around 85-100 at discounters. They had it on clearance with a red label for $79 which is a pretty decent price, so it came home with me.
