Do these calls get recorded? Interested because I’ll be working at the time of most meetings looks like.
Hi Everyone!
Hey y’all! I’m new to this community. My name is Eric and I have been certified for 8 years now. I worked in professional baseball with the Astros for 6 years and although I enjoyed it, family is my number 1 priority and so my wife any I moved to WI to be close to family and are now expecting our first (new girl dad!). I have transitioned to the clinic setting as a physician extender and it’s been interesting. Ups and downs, I love the work life balance for sure, but I definitely miss working with athletes and am looking at building an independent, cash-based, clinic. I’ve got a lot of work to do to get that rolling in terms of standing orders and other logistical things. But I’m excited to see what’s going on in this group and hope to be able to learn from y’all and maybe share some things I’ve learned along the way. I’m definitely open to any thoughts our advice (specifically on getting set up, physically - location, equipment, etc. and what that looks like)

@Jenna Doggett great question and that is biggest fear!! When my wife and I moved back to the Midwest I took any job I could find and it was in PM&R and there were 2 ATs (including myself) and it was a great gig. I had a lot of autonomy and the physician was amazing. In Wisconsin an ATs evaluation holds weight and I can perform full evaluations and document and it holds in court so I got to make decisions on diagnoses and treatment plans and 95% of the time the provider trusted my judgement. Unfortunately the clinic was an hour away and we have a baby on the way so the new clinic, yes. It’s a hybrid of AT and sometimes feeling like an MA. But I’m also new and training and the plan is for me to see my own patients without a provider on occasion. I’m now working with 3 providers that have sports med certifications but are family practice doctors so there great but like spending a lot of time with their patients which gives me less to do sadly. Which is why sometimes I do MA work. From my experience it comes down to the physician but ultimately working in a specialty clinic gives more autonomy. My mindset is that at the end of the day I did the cool stuff of pro ball, but now I have a steady schedule, weekends free, when I leave work I don’t get any late night calls, and most importantly I can be a present partner and future father. It all depends where your priorities lie and family is everything to me. Plus if I need a fix of athletes there’s always Go4 and I can pick up shifts there. But also why I’m looking at the independent cash based clinic too because I like the performance training and recovery a lot. Big sports science guy haha. But I digress. Long winded way to say it depends on the provider and clinic. If the first clinic were closer I’d stay there for a while.

@Josie Grigsby thank you for the insight!! super excited to become a parent!! Yeah with where I live and my previous experience as an athlete and athletic trainer I was thinking high level collegiate or men’s league rugby with the occasional baseball athlete. But ultimately just a high motor individual (even a weekend warrior) that wants performance guidance along with recovery techniques.
