The Sanctuary Is Closed: America’s On-Orbit Space Control Weapons and the Two Adversaries That Forced the Issue
Last week the United States stopped pretending space was a sanctuary. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink told the Air, Space & Cyber Conference that America now has on-orbit space-control weapons capable of defending the joint force against hostile adversary action. It was the first time a senior Pentagon official said the quiet part out loud. The phrasing was deliberate. The capability is not theoretical. The domain that underwrites missile warning, navigation, ISR, and joint command-and-control is no longer treated as a place we merely observe. That admission was forced, not invented. The Chinese Communist Party spent more than a decade building a counterspace force in the open: direct-ascent ASAT units in training, co-orbital inspectors, GEO rendezvous and refueling experiments, and hundreds of ISR satellites designed to find and fix U.S. forces. Putin’s Russia went further into the criminalized dark—matching orbits with American national-security satellites, fielding co-orbital ASAT prototypes, releasing objects on orbit, and treating the heavens as an extension of a counterintelligence state that already murders, sabotages, and lies as policy. Anyone still calling this an “arms race we started” is not reading the threat picture. We are late to a fight our adversaries already funded. I spent twenty years writing that this day would come: policy papers, design elements, and threat assessments arguing that space superiority is not optional once an enemy can hold the joint force at risk from orbit. Deployment is not the end of the argument. It is the start of the one that matters—how we employ, proliferate, and deter without turning the commons into debris. The weapons are on orbit. The question now is whether we have the doctrine, the authority, and the will to use control of space the way we already use control of the air. some of the public post made reflecting the other work i did on force transformation, the nature that defines the hybrid force structure and reason that underwrites why we had to pursue it.

The Threat Came First: A Record of Orbital Belligerency Long before the United States publicly acknowledged operational on-orbit space-control weapons in September 2026, the Chinese Communist Party and Putin’s criminalized counterintelligence state had spent decades developing, testing, and fielding counterspace capabilities capable of threatening the orbital infrastructure upon which the United States Joint Force depends. Current United States Space Force reporting independently documents Chinese direct-ascent weapons, lasers, jammers and maneuvering spacecraft, alongside Russian anti-satellite missiles, orbital systems, directed-energy weapons and electronic attack. Chinese Communist Party - Post–Gulf War / parasite-satellite concept: Pentagon reports in 2003 and 2004 cited reporting that China had developed and tested a “parasitic microsatellite” concept intended to attach to a larger satellite and interfere with or destroy it. https://china.usc.edu/node/20223 | https://china.usc.edu/node/20222 - - Co-orbital capability: China subsequently developed rendezvous, proximity-operation and robotic-manipulation capabilities, culminating in spacecraft such as SJ-21 physically moving another satellite from geosynchronous orbit to a graveyard orbit. https://www.spaceforce.mil/About-Us/Fact-Sheets/Fact-Sheet-Display/Article/4297159/space-threat-fact-sheet/ - - - - - 2006 ground-laser illumination of a United States satellite: National Reconnaissance Office Director Donald Kerr confirmed that at least one American spacecraft had been illuminated by a Chinese ground-based laser, providing an early demonstrated example of directed-energy interaction with an American orbital asset. https://spacenews.com/nro-confirms-chinese-laser-test-illuminated-us-spacecraft/ - - - - - January 2007 destructive anti-satellite intercept: China used a ground-launched direct-ascent weapon to destroy its FY-1C weather satellite in low Earth orbit, generating thousands of trackable debris objects and demonstrating an actual satellite-kill capability. https://2001-2009.state.gov/t/isn/rm/2008/99746.htm - - - - - Expansion toward higher-orbit attack: A 2013 Chinese ballistic launch reached roughly 30,000 kilometers, which United States Space Force reporting says suggests a potential basic capability against satellites operating at much higher orbital altitudes. https://www.spaceforce.mil/About-Us/Fact-Sheets/Fact-Sheet-Display/Article/4297159/space-threat-fact-sheet/ - - - - - 2014 anti-satellite missile test: The United States government assessed China’s July 23, 2014 event as a non-destructive test of a missile designed to destroy satellites in low Earth orbit despite Beijing characterizing the event differently. https://2009-2017.state.gov/t/avc/rls/2014/232130.htm - - - - - Operational lasers and electronic warfare: The United States Space Force now assesses that the People’s Liberation Army possesses multiple ground-based laser weapons capable of disrupting, degrading or damaging satellite sensors and routinely incorporates jamming of satellite communications and navigation into exercises. https://www.spaceforce.mil/About-Us/Fact-Sheets/Fact-Sheet-Display/Article/4297159/space-threat-fact-sheet/ -
