ISBN for Broad Distribution
I'm about to purchase my ISBNs for my relaunch so that I have my own imprint. I'm wanting to use broad distribution through KDP and Ingramspark. Now, I'm having a little confusion. Will the ISBN I purchase from Bowker (Bowker labels it as US) work for this broad distribution to the UK? Will Amazon and Ingram handle the broad distribution issues if the Bowker ISBN is literally only for the US, or do I have to purchase the Bowker US ISBNs plus the Nielsen ISBNs? I can't afford to spend almost 300.00 on ISBNs and not get it right when I have the other expenses of publishing with which I must contend.

@S H You’re on the right track by securing your own ISBNs for the relaunch. If your imprint is US-based, Bowker ISBNs can be used for international distribution, including the UK, so you don’t need to purchase a separate Nielsen set just for that. Where I’d advise you to be careful is the KDP + IngramSpark setup. The ISBN itself isn’t the expensive mistake, the distribution structure is. Set up your imprint, ISBNs, editions, and distribution channels correctly from the beginning, and you’ll avoid unnecessary costs, conflicts, and headaches down the road. How are you currently planning to handle the publishing and distribution side of the relaunch?
Have you ever found readers in a place you never expected?
I feel like we spend so much time trying to figure out where our readers should be that we sometimes overlook where they’re actually finding us. Maybe it was a random conversation, a recommendation from another reader, a post you almost didn’t share, a newsletter, a book club, a podcast, a local event, or something completely unexpected. Where have your readers actually been coming from lately, and what have you been doing that seems to be helping? Even if it only brought you a handful of new readers, I’d still love to hear about it. Sometimes the small discoveries are the ones that give another author their next idea.

@Beth Macy I think I’ve heard about it before. Out of curiosity, how does it actually work, and how would someone get started with it?

What genre is your current manuscript? Have you published before or will this be your first?

@Adi Kanda That sounds like a fascinating stage to be in, especially with Book Two releasing so soon. The fact that the companion card deck is built from the transmissions also gives you an interesting opportunity to create a connected reader experience rather than marketing the book as a standalone release. With the new imprint, consistent series presentation and clear positioning will be especially important for the relaunch of Book One and the launch of Book Two. With the September 16 release approaching, are you already working on the marketing and reader-visibility strategy, or is that the part you’re focusing on next?
🚨Printing Platforms!
I just hand another major issue with IngramSpark and I’m curious to know your thoughts on the best current platform for self publishing and why??

@Adi Kanda That’s great to hear! 😊 It sounds like Ingram has really delivered for you, especially with the early shipment and those Indigo and Coles placements. Getting both distribution and in-person signing opportunities is a strong result. Since you’ve had such a positive experience with Ingram, I’m curious, are you planning to use the same distribution strategy for your next book, and how are you planning to build visibility around the launch?
You don't need to be ready. You need to start.
I bluffed my way into my first magazine commission. I said yes before I knew if I could deliver. My first published work makes me cringe when I read it now. But it was published. And every piece after it was a little better. I'm assuming you are here because you have a book in you. What's one small step you could take towards your book this week?
