how to navigate the adviser landscape in terms of balancing advising on development vs advising on recruiting

Right, is there a perfect balance to the focus on personal athletic and mental development vs efforts on recruiting, or does the former always simply take care of the latter?

Q&A
Why don't you see many Americans playing U-Sports?
4 Major Reasons: 1. Awareness is the biggest factor. Most American hockey families have never heard of U Sports. It simply doesn't come up in the conversations happening at rinks, with club coaches, or in recruiting circles in the US. The recruiting infrastructure that exists for NCAA — recruiting services, showcase exposure, coach networks — is almost entirely built around the NCAA system. U Sports doesn't have that same pipeline into American youth hockey. 2. Cost is real but more nuanced than people think. Yes, international student tuition at Canadian universities is significantly higher than domestic rates — sometimes double or triple. But when you factor in that many top D3 schools in the US cost $65,000-75,000 per year before aid, the gap closes considerably. A Canadian school at $30,000-40,000 USD per year as an international student can still be cheaper than a NESCAC school with partial aid. The problem is most families never run those numbers because they never get far enough into the process to consider it. 3. Eligibility complexity scares families off. U Sports has its own eligibility rules that differ from the NCAA. If a family is considering both simultaneously — which most serious recruits are — the interaction between the two systems requires careful navigation. One wrong move can affect NCAA eligibility. Most families don't want to risk it without expert guidance so they default to the known quantity. 4. The cultural leap feels bigger than it is. Moving to Canada for four years feels more foreign to American families than moving across the country for an NCAA program — even though realistically the adjustment is minimal. That perception keeps a lot of families from even exploring it seriously. The honest bottom line: U Sports is genuinely one of the most underutilized pathways for American female hockey players. Elite competition, strong academics, and in many cases more affordable than people assume. The barrier is almost entirely informational — families just don't know it exists as a real option.

The more I look at combo of cost/quality of education/hockey experience, the more it makes sense to look at Usports for many scenarios
From Prep to Pro is officially on your calendar.
Hey Everyone! Many of you have registered here for From Prep to Pro on Sunday, July 27 at 7:00 PM EST, and we could not be more pumped for this one. You'll be hearing directly from four mentors who've lived the exact path you're on right now: 🇭🇺 Madie — SDHL professional & Team Hungary National Team, founder of ProPath 🇭🇺 Lotti Odnoga — Captain, Team Hungary National Team; NCAA at Dartmouth & St. Thomas before turning pro 🇨🇭 Kaleigh Quennec — 2026 Olympic bronze medalist with Switzerland, now playing for SC Bern 🇺🇸 Gabby Jones — Hockey East captain at UNH, now pro in the SDHL Sneak peek of what we're getting into: - The real (messy, non-linear) story of how each of us actually got recruited - What we wish someone had told us as prep school freshmen - How we handled being cut, injured, or overlooked — because it happened to all of us - What actually matters to college and pro coaches/scouts (vs. what everyone thinks matters) - A live Q&A where you can ask us anything Before the 27th, drop a comment below 👇 with the ONE question you most want a pro to answer about recruiting, prep school, or making the jump to the next level. We'll be pulling questions straight from this thread for the live panel — so the more specific, the better your odds of getting it answered live. See you on the ice (virtually) in a couple weeks. 🥅

Why do you rarely see Americans going to USports instead of D3 routes? Is it lack of awareness of the USports landscape or does it have to do with higher costs for Americans in Canadian universities?
