🌾 Fiber: The 4th Macro Nobody Talks About
Ask anyone their macros and you'll get three numbers: protein, carbs, fat. But Dr. Eric Trexler over at MASS Research Review just dropped a killer article making the case that fiber deserves a seat at the table. He jokingly calls it the "fourth-coolest macronutrient." I'm calling it time to put it in the game. 🏀 All credit for this one goes to Dr. Trexler and the MASS team. Here's my plain-English breakdown 👇 🚨 MOST OF US ARE COMING UP SHORT - Fewer than 1 in 10 American adults hit their daily fiber target (some data says as few as 4%!) - The typical American eats about 16 grams a day - Eating more fiber is linked to lower risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, depression, gut diseases, and even dying from heart disease, cancer, or any cause 🔬 WHAT IS FIBER? It's a carb your body can't fully digest. Protein, carbs, and fat get absorbed in your small intestine. Fiber sneaks right past to your large intestine, where your gut bacteria get first dibs. ⚖️ THE TWO MAIN TYPES - **Soluble:** dissolves in water, feeds your gut bugs, makes some gas, about 1.5–2 calories per gram - **Insoluble:** doesn't dissolve, adds bulk, keeps you regular, basically zero calories - **Psyllium (Metamucil):** the oddball. Mostly soluble, but forms a gel that's GREAT for constipation 😬 WATCH OUT FOR THE SIDEKICKS Sugar alcohols like maltitol and sorbitol (hello, sugar-free gummy bears 🐻) can cause serious gas and... urgent bathroom trips. If you're bloated, check these and FODMAPs before blaming fiber. 🍽️ FIBER FIGHTS HUNGER Fiber adds volume without many calories, so you feel fuller. And eating more fiber plus resistant starch can mean your body absorbs up to 100–150 fewer calories a day. Combine that with high protein and Dr. Eric Helms at MASS estimates up to ~260 calories a day. Same label, fewer calories in the tank! 🔥 🎯 YOUR GAME PLAN - **Target:** Men 19–50: 38 g | Men 51+: 30 g | Women 19–50: 25 g | Women 51+: 21 g - **OR** 14 grams per 1,000 calories you eat, whichever is HIGHER

I love to travel. I like an adventure. I love hard especially my son. My body disappoints me most days. I am working on that. Ups and downs are okay.
