This is a great resource for veterans looking to start or grow their businesses! As an Air Force veteran currently building Heaton Outdoor Co., I'm learning just how valuable the right networks, mentorship, and local resources can be. I'd be especially interested in seeing how Tennessee cities compare and what opportunities exist for veteran entrepreneurs in smaller communities. Appreciate you sharing this!
Here's How You Build a Business
There's a big difference between knowing what to do and actually doing it. And that difference is why so many aspiring entrepreneurs and side hustlers are still working a 9-to-5 while trying to build their business on nights and weekends. Reading another book. Watching another YouTube video. Taking another course. Researching another business idea. Gaining more information. This is NOT taking action! Don't get me wrong. Education is important. But information only becomes valuable when you put it to work. After building nine businesses over the past 30 years, I've learned that you don't build a business by knowing everything. You build a business by taking action, making mistakes, learning from customers, and adjusting along the way. Jeff Arredondo, a veteran who went through the 5-Day Startup Veteran Challenge, shared this after completing the program, and it perfectly captures what I'm talking about: "Hal has been instrumental in getting me from an over analyzer of information to taking action! Sometimes you have to have enough information to take the jump and just take action!” That's exactly why I created the FREE 5-Day Startup Veteran Challenge. Not to give you another five days of information to consume. But to give you five days of specific actions designed to move you closer to building a business that can replace your paycheck. Five days. Five missions. All action. 👉 Join the challenge: https://startupveteran.com/challenge

This really resonates with me. As an Air Force veteran building Heaton Outdoor Co., I've learned how easy it is to get caught up in researching, planning, and trying to have everything figured out before moving forward. But some of my biggest lessons have come from actually taking action, building relationships, reaching out to manufacturers, and learning through the process. Preparation matters, but execution is what creates progress. I also believe the key is knowing when you've researched enough to make an informed decision and when it's time to take that next step. Great message, Hal! I appreciate what you're doing to help fellow veterans turn their ideas into reality.

GO ARMY! BEAT NAVY! I'm Nicholas Jordan, an Army veteran, new entrepreneur, and technical founder. I founded Acris Software in September 2025 to create a new AI-native Electronic Medical Records system for small-to-medium size neurology clinics due to my combat injuries. I'm currently completing PenFed Foundation's Incubator Program, IVMF's Syracuse University's EBV program, and will be attending Harvard University's Foundry program in September. I'm passionate about what I'm building and I've been writing software since I could walk. I spent the last 5 years rehabilitating from injuries, physical and mental, where I attended PTSD Foundation of America's Camp Hope in Houston Texas. That healing journey has led me to my new mission: revealing the unseen.

Nicholas, from one veteran to another, welcome aboard! Although, as an Air Force veteran, I might have to stay neutral on that Army-Navy rivalry! 😂 Seriously though, I have a lot of respect for your journey and how you've turned personal adversity into a mission to help others. It's impressive what you're building with Acris Software, especially with your focus on improving neurological care. I'm building Heaton Outdoor Co., with a long-term interest in using fishing and outdoor experiences to support veterans' mental health and well-being. I'd love to hear more about your experience with the PenFed Incubator and IVMF programs. Have they been valuable in helping you grow your business?
Introduction
Hello all, I'm Jamal Braxton, an Air Force veteran. I used to work on C-130s at Little Rock Air Force Base. Now I'm out and interested in starting a business. I work full time, so I want to replace that with a business, and this seems like a good place to start. Thanks for having me.

Hey Jamal, great to meet you, and thank you for your service! Always good to connect with another Air Force veteran. I'm currently approaching my separation in December after over 11 years of service and working on building my own business, Heaton Outdoor Co. I'm still in the early stages myself, so I can definitely relate to wanting to turn entrepreneurship into something sustainable. I think we're both in a great place to learn from others who've already made that transition. Have you started exploring any particular business ideas or industries, or are you still figuring out which direction you'd like to go? Looking forward to connecting and hopefully learning from each other along the way!

Jamal, that sounds like a great direction to take, especially with how quickly AI is evolving and how many businesses still haven't figured out how to use it effectively. I think there's a real opportunity in helping small businesses streamline operations, reduce costs, and free up time. I've actually been exploring AI quite a bit myself, especially as I work on building Heaton Outdoor Co. Between content creation, manufacturing coordination, networking, and eventually e-commerce, I'm always looking for ways to work smarter and more efficiently. I'd definitely be interested in hearing more about what you're building and the types of solutions you're looking to offer. Have you started working with any businesses yet, or are you still developing your services? Always great connecting with another Air Force veteran, and I'm looking forward to seeing where you take this!

Hi Tina, it's great to meet you! I really appreciate the work you're doing to improve people's quality of life, both through your therapy practice and your volunteer efforts. Wounded Heroes Hunting Camp especially caught my attention! I'm currently transitioning out of the Air Force after over 11 years of service and building Heaton Outdoor Co., a fishing and outdoor lifestyle brand focused on conservation, education, and community. I'm also pursuing my degree in social work, and one of my long-term goals is to explore fishing and outdoor-based wellness opportunities, particularly for veterans. I'd love to learn more about your involvement with Wounded Heroes Hunting Camp and the impact you've seen outdoor experiences have on veterans. It sounds like we may share some similar passions, and I'd enjoy connecting!
