Dividing by zero
A student told me one time, “yeh yeh. Ya can’t divide by zero. No one knows why, but it’s a rule.” Now hold up just a minute! Nobody knows why? Y’all tell him why…..

Division in one way is repeated subtraction until you run out of stuff. So, for example: 12/4 is 12-4-4-4 =0 which means that you can subtract 3 "4's" until you run out of stuff. For division with zero... how many zeroes must you subtract from 12 until you run out of stuff?
Two negatives make a positive.
Often, I hear exactly that… “well, two negatives make a positive….”, the students say. Sometimes they’re right. And sometimes, they’re wrong. Can you follow my vague, barely-told story and fill in the details? When would they be right? When would they be wrong?

Students aren't alone in their confusion—for centuries, the greatest mathematicians in the world thought negative numbers were absurd and refused to use them. The ancient Greeks dismissed them entirely, calling them "fictitious."

Zero paired models for integers are useful ways of showing this I’ve found. Kind of like how the ancient Chinese used counting rods to model fortune and debts.
