Shuttle Runs & Lower Back Pump - Thoughts?
I have a female athlete who is currently competing at Semi Finals level, and I’m looking for some input on an issue we’ve been seeing consistently. Whenever she performs shuttle runs, she gets a very significant pump/fatigue through both erectors/lower back. It seems to be quite specific to shuttle running rather than running in general. Has anyone experienced something similar with an athlete? I’d be interested to hear how you approached it from a programming perspective. Did you modify the shuttle volume/frequency, use different running variations, address mechanics, or do anything specific to improve her tolerance? I’m less interested in simply removing shuttle runs and more interested in finding a way to understand and address the limitation so she can eventually tolerate them better. Any experiences or programming approaches would be really appreciated.

@Nick Cole-Butler @Kyle Ruth Really appreciate this, thanks. The mechanics at the turn is definitely something I need to look at more closely, especially as she gets tired! I’ll have a closer look at her running mechanics and specifically what’s happening through the turn. I’ll also try the free hand/elbow on the lead thigh (I actually do this myself) and see if that changes how she handles the turnaround. For her warm up, I’ll normally give her some hip flow stuff followed by some hinging! I like your “shoo the cat” idea though. Maybe some more rotational movements to help. The lumbar extension into lumbar flexion point makes a lot of sense too. I’ll have a look at that during her straight line running as well. Thanks again…. gives me a few things to assess before jumping straight into changing the programming.

Maybe a bit of a random one here Kyle! I watched a video of yours a few years back explaining how you use google sheets for programming. It was on TTTedu portal! For those who are computer illiterate such as myself 🤗 it was a great resource to have and to refer back to. I’m just wondering do you still have it and could you share it here if possible? 🙏🙏

Welcome to The Ruth Performance Lab!
I’ve created this as a community for athletes and coaches in the competitive fitness space to learn and collaborate. I’ll be sharing deep dives of training concepts, program design breakdowns, and inviting subject matter experts in everything from mental performance training and nutrition to niche topics like breathing and BFR. What to expect here: For my individual coaching clients: 1. Weekly Office Hours starting the first week after Thanksgiving 2. A full library of all Office Hours recordings 3. A resource library for everything training and performance related from the Competitors Manual, travel guidelines, pacing breakdowns, to nutrition and supplement guides. For everyone else: 1. Training education, system breakdowns, and long-form posts. 2. A place to ask questions and learn alongside other serious athletes and coaches. Thanks for being here, I’m excited to grow this alongside you!
