Heading into the summer, showcases and camps are a BIG topic. One of the biggest mistakes AA & AAA hockey families make is treating showcases like lottery tickets. More showcases ≠ more opportunity And Fewer showcases ≠ falling behind. Here’s the right way to think about showcases if your goal is college hockey: 1. Showcases don’t create readiness — they reveal it. A showcase doesn’t make a player recruitable, it only shows coaches where an athlete is right now. If the foundation isn’t there yet (skating, skill, IQ, maturity, etc.), more showcases won’t fix that — they just add stress and cost. The question to ask isn’t: “Which showcase should we attend?” It’s: “Is this the right time for exposure?” 2. Timing matters more than volume For most players: - (Fresh/soph) 14–15: Development > exposure - (Soph/junior) 16–17: Targeted exposure > random exposure - (Junior/Senior) 18: Decision clarity > chasing attention Too much exposure too early can actually work against players by: - Creating false urgency - Distracting from development Being early isn’t the goal, being ready at the right time is. 3. Coaches don’t recruit off one weekend College coaches are looking for: - Patterns in your play - Development!! (Big one -- If a coach sees that you've improved year to year, they begin to understand what they could expect from you in a college setting) - Context for you as a teammate, student, human, etc. One good (or bad) showcase rarely changes anything on its own. What matters more is: - Where the athlete plays during the season - How they progress year to year - Whether exposure aligns with their level and path Showcases are data points, not decisions. 4. Every showcase should have a purpose Before committing to a showcase, families should be able to answer: - Who is this for? - What level of coach will be there? - Why this event, this year? - What does “success” look like coming out of it? If the only reason is:
