This ideas was kind of borrowed from a martial artist who I watch on YouTube called Instructor Bensei. He often does shorts where he gives his wisdom, short bits of advice that he feels will help others. And whenever he's at events or working on projects with friends, he'll ask them for their wisdom. I'd like to get the wisdom of those of in the community. And I'm not looking for anything particularly in depth about a specific instrument or musical concept. Just a simple perspective on/approach to music in general that you think might be unique and could help others. My wisdom is to learn about instruments that you don't play. And I'm not suggesting that you buy and learn to play them (though that is very fun) or that you take proper lessons (unless you want to). Just that you watch videos about how they work and how they're played on YouTube, IG, TikTok, etc. or read up about them online. Learning about how various instruments operate and how those who specialize in those instruments think about and even physically play them will inevitably and, in my experience, positively affect how you approach your main instrument(s). I've learned a lot about rhythm from watching videos about drums and other percussion instruments, piano videos have changed how I think about harmony, videos about horns and woodwinds have taught me a lot about melody, and learning about synths has altered how I think about sound in general. And it all feeds back into how I think about and interact with the little box with 4 stings and a neck that I use to make my music. So ... what is your wisdom?
