Zone 8b New Garden space
Ok sounds good... in zone 8b, its time to get some transplants in the ground soon... If I did till this first year, I would not go deep 2 - 4" is good... the compost would be great as long as the leaves and greens are broken down. If the leaves not full decomposed, they can still be used for top mulch after the plants are 8" or taller to protect the soil from the sun... It will be very important to make sure no soil is left exposed to the sun... What's growing in your area now?

Ha I'm zone 8b and I'm just gonna start some seeds. I'm kinda behind but we had some late frosts and I don't put stuff into the ground till May 24th unless I'm direct sowing.

@Jim Flach ya I know what they all are, a lot of them are edible but the ones I fight with are morning glory and blackberries. We also have a lot of wild mint. I didn't even think about it but I do have somethings other new weeds growing, garlic, blueberries, raspberries, and the fruit trees are doing well. I'll take a picture the next time I go out.

Question
I have volunteer tomatoes everywhere. I have a few pretty tight together. Should I transplant and risk stunting growth or just let them grow guiding the stems away from each other.

I actually hate it when this happens, I crop rotate so I wouldn't leave them there amd I hate pulling them out. I'd dig them up and put them in a pot until their ready for their forever space.

I would definitely say it depends on what your mulching, of I'm doing the bed 3-4 inches is good but if I'm mulching pathway and for weed suppression the sky's the limit😂
