A Gentleman's Vocabulary
"Unique" and "data" are used wrong all the time! I firmly believe that using our words carefully and accurately is a central aspect of being a well-intentioned gentleman. Vocabulary ensures that what we say is accurately understood by our audience (online and in person). Vocabulary is also the single strongest predictor of overall intelligence on standardized intelligence tests (this was my field of research for about a decade). In order to avoid this coming across as elitist, I want to stress that the two guidances below - certainly pet peeves of mine - are words we use every day rather than something only used in rarified academia or by some PhD on a sartorial forum... πŸ€“ Unique: its simple definition is "one of a kind". This is dichotomous, like a light is on or off. No in between. Therefore, nothing can be "really unique", or "largely unique" or nearly any other modifier applied to it. When something is not one of a kind, we still like "unique" because it sounds stronger than what we should probably say: very rare. It is, however, wrong and inaccurately conveys our intent. The only appropriate modifier for unique is something which clarifies the noun is becoming unique. If only three of something remain in the world and one is destroyed, saying the final two are "nearly unique" is appropriate. Data: this word is ALWAYS a plural. Datum is the word to describe a single piece of data. This is just like saying "this people is funny" when we mean "this person is funny". As a statistician, you can only begin to imagine how much this drives me nuts because of its near omnipresent use. "These data are impressive" may sound weird at first, but it is the only grammatically appropriate way to say it. I hope this was helpful and not pedantic!

@Dr. Jason Cole Proper words, matter, and proper language have meaning in a civilized society. So, when someone uses improper words and disapproving language, that young man damages himself, his profession, and especially his family name. 🀨 My Nana (Grandmother) would say this phrase to me often, especially when correcting a young man’s poor etiquette and rhetoric. πŸ™‡πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈ

Undershirt Collars Debate: Crewneck or V-neck?
I'm buying a new white dress shirt soon and was wondering about undershirt collars: Crewneck or V-neck? Traditionally, we have all worn Crew-Neck shirts. However, I have been leaning more toward V-neck shirts whenever I buy a solid-color T-shirt. I think the difference is that these newer V-necks aren't cut down so low that you look like Patrick Swayze πŸ˜‡ in the 80s & 90s. Do any of you gentlemen wear V-Neck undershirts?

@Kyle Wilson Those pictures are screenshots of DXL’s (Big & Talk) clothing app. Now, I have regular V-Neck t-shirts, but unfortunately I’ve been using a regular and thicker white t-shirt as an undershirt. It makes little difference but during the summer in Georgia is like wearing a cardigan vest.

My 1st Sports Jacket at 45. πŸ˜‰
This is the first Sports Jacket I’ve ever purchased myself. The last one I had was an 18th birthday present. Anyway, it’s a 54 Long Navy checked plaid with Burgundy lines, and is getting tailored in a few weeks. So, my question is: should I wear a silk pocket square or use a handkerchief for the breast pocket?

@Peter Powis It was a big step for me, too. Especially since I live in Southern Georgia, I normally wear more vests, but at this stage in senatorial dress, it was time for my first sports jacket. 🀝 I say go for it. πŸ˜‰
