I had an interesting experience earlier this week.and I want to share it. I was trying to get a group of about thirty people to 'think about how they think'. Because to me that's where change begins. I handed them each a picture of fifteen pair of glasses that all had different colored lenses. Underneath each pair of glasses was the word or line that described that lens. The title was, 'How Do You See The World'? The discussion centered around the lenses, but it also centered around our definition of each lens. Words matter. All of us went away recognizing that our lens was not somebody else's, but also recognizing that our definition of their lens was not their definition of their own lens. .in the end, communication is life. A phrase that I have come to believe is true, but shouldn't be is:" i am not who I think I am.And I am not who you think I am. But I am who I think you think I am." Today would be a good day for all of us to consider the lens through which we see life, how it differs from someone else's lens, and if we have the capacity to hear their definition and understand that from their viewpoint. In a way, it was what stmSve Covey was trying to say when he would say, 'seek first to understand then, to be understood.'
