Intro
Hi all! I'm a 43 year old mum to a gorgeous 5 year old boy. Born and raised in Sydney Australia, but moved to London in 2014 and then to my husband's home town in Italy during the pandemic.
I first learnt I had scoliosis in my 20s but it was never an issue so I never really got it checked out. I had some minor back pain which I managed with yoga throughout my 20s and 30s and although I didn't exercise alot, I kept active by walking everywhere (and dancing all night whenever possible! ;)). During pregnancy, my spine actually straightened out a little and I didn't have any back pain at all!
Fast forward a few years though, my lifestyle has become much more sedentary and I started gaining weight around my belly (which created some panic, as I've always been quite slim). So I switched to diastisis recti safe core work (probably an incorrect self diagnosis) and then recently, moved to strength training as the belly wasn't shifting. I think the strength training (which was not specific to scoliosis!) may have done some damage, as my lower back and hip joint on one side is significantly worse than ever before and nothing seems to ease the discomfort.
I realise I probably need to seek a proper check of my spine but until then, I'm keen to learn ways to be more aware of my body and the impact of my scoliosis, how to manage pain and how to strengthen my body safely.
