Welcome! Start Here.
This is the Cob and Natural Building School. A community of people interesting in building natural, healthy homes. We teach everyone how to build their own cob home using traditional and modern techniques. Step 1: Comment Below! - Who you are - What your building goals are - What’s your biggest bottleneck right now? 😩 Step 2: Go through the Cob Building Basics Course! See START HERE - COB BUILDING BASICS
Small Projects
In preparation for big projects(I want to build a toilet structure next, and then a house) I built a cob greenhouse wall along with a simple cob garden wall (both have lime plaster on them for longevity). One wall I left unplastered just to see what would happen to it over time. So far they've weathered freezing temps, snow, ice, wind, storms, etc. Nothing much has happened :) Would like to get some more experience/ideas for optimal structural integrity-preferably with raw wood rounds, recycled material, etc. I snagged these windows on the greenhouse for free but they are quite old and not fit for a livable structure.
Straw & Hemp Fiber Insulation Walls
I am as much an advocate for straw and hemp fiber walls as I am for earth walls. Natural fiber and earth have different properties, but deliver the overall benefits that people are looking for in construction. I'll be opening up my straw-clay course very soon. This class will cover in detail how to construct straw-clay and hempcrete/hemp-slip walls. Who's interested in these natural building materials?
This guy built his house for $200. Zero mortgage. 🏡
Sage found his materials right on the property — cob, wood, all free stuff. Only paid for screws, glue, and silicone. And honestly the house looks really nice! $200 is a rare situation, but it proves the $400K/30-year-mortgage thing isn't the only option. I can relate to his tiny living situation too. It really connects you back to the outside world by not being cooped up indoors for everything. What's your target budget for your build? Drop it below, and let me know what you think of this build. 👇
