I've been critical of AI for quantity takeoffs for a long time. The reason is simple: about 80% of your direct costs move with your quantities. Get them wrong and you've underquoted the job.
So would I let AI loose on a $5m lump sum bid? No — I'd still do those myself.
But for a quick conceptual estimate, or checking a takeoff you've already done, it's genuinely stepped up.
The trick is constraining it to what it does reliably.
That's counting text.
If you can highlight the text on a PDF, AI can count the tags and pull dimensions off it almost perfectly. So you count the footings, grab the slab depth off the drawing, and let it derive the concrete volume.
What you don't do is ask it to measure pixels off a compressed image — that's where it falls over.
Count what's reliable. Derive the rest. Score everything for confidence so you know what to go back and check.
