Written Lesson -This is how Felicia first taught herself to slow down and prioritize the fundamentals of shape, value, and edge in order to become consistent in her outcomes regarding accuracy and desired affect. To choose a process and stick to it faithfully until it becomes second nature and no longer offers challenge is the fastest way to learn this skill. This is the process Felicia developed and then followed for 4-5 years before she needed to evolve to learn more.

Written Lesson & Video - This is the natural next step after grasping Felicia's drawing tutorial. You are asked to repeat the seemingly simple but most essential aspects of her process without moving onto any finish/detail. This is a three hour drill of 5 starts on one page. If you practice this exercise you strengthen your ability to observe the big picture first leading you to more accurate shapes, values, and color. This the core of the painting process that Felicia used to build her skill.

This is how Felicia translated what she learned in her step by step drawing method into her alla prima portrait painting practice. The prioritization of fundamentals and a strict step by step process continues with the addition of the complexity paint: color, application, texture/consistency. The repetition of this exercise from either life or master copy within the limitations laid out in this lesson was the number one factor in the building of her skill with painting.

Here we will be using Felicia's method that has been building in Lessons 1-3 and adjusting it for still life painting in Lesson 4. The difference is that a portrait/head has one basic local color and a still life set up may have many objects, all of different local color. So instead of choosing only one average dark and one average light to lay in your composition, you will have the option to choose an average dark and an average light for each item of unique local color.

Learning to paint is being able to simultaneously, and accurately observe and record SHAPES, VALUES, EDGES, and COLOR. That is A LOT to keep track of! Sometimes we need to focus on and perfect one thing at a time. Here are some lessons to help you pare down and get ahead.

I had a gentle, intuitive... inspiration? Idea? The idea felt good to me, but my mind immediately judged it as something I already decided not to focus on anymore! It has to do with writing about painting. I have learned to trust that gentle intuitive nudge, but not to attach too heavily to where it will lead.
