On September 28th, CA Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill that creates a voluntary ‘non-UPF’ label. This bill does not say exactly what is an Ultraprocessed Food, but CA defines Ultraprocessed Foods in an earlier bill passed in October of 2025 as a food or beverage with at least one of the ingredient categories below: - Artificial colors - Emulsifiers - Stabilizers and thickeners - Flavors and flavor enhancers: "natural and artificial flavors," MSG. - Propellants, aerating agents, and gases - Surface-active agents AND ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: - high saturated fat - high sodium - high added sugar ALSO, any non-nutrititive sweetener is AUTOMATICALLY not eligible for this label #win So, just having a non-nutritive sweetener like Sucralose, Aspartame, or stevia will count a food or beverage as a UPF by itself. I see this as a step in the right direction, but as always, there is still lots of work to be done when it comes to making United States citizens healthy and educated on this stuff. I would like to see the terms of UPF be reworked to exclude saturated fats, and INCLUDE seed oils. What do you think?
